City of Cleveland to Put Police Officers Back on the Job COPS Award Allows Recall of 25 Police Officers for 3 years

The City of Cleveland will be recalling 25 of the Division of Police (CPD) officers affected by the state-imposed layoffs, after receiving a grant in the amount of $5,864,275. The grant will cover the full salary and benefits packages of the recalled CPD officers for three years. Click here for a list of Ohio awardees."These returning officers are well-trained, experienced and can quickly resume their careers and service to the community," stated Public Safety Director Martin L. Flask.

      CPD is one of 238 law enforcement agencies in the country to receive part of $243 million in grants allocated to the COPS Hiring Program (CHP) by the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office).

      "The COPS program has been one of the mainstays in the Justice Department’s efforts to support local law enforcement," said Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio. "The Department of Justice is proud to support the Cleveland Division of Police in their efforts to protect our community."

      CHP grants provide funding to state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies to hire, preserve and/or rehire career law enforcement officers in an effort to create and preserve jobs and increase their community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts.
