Submitted by Quest-News-Serv... on Sat, 08/03/2013 - 15:45.
Join your friends and neighbors from 5 to 9 p.m. this Tuesday at Steelyard Commons for a National Night Out Against Crime.
What is the National Night Out Against Crime?
Jennifer Scudellari, operations and marketing coordinator for First Interstate Properties, which owns and manages Steelyard Commons: The National Night Out Against Crime is an effort to heighten awareness of crime, drug and violence prevention. The goal is to generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs. Together, we want to strengthen neighborhood spirit and police/community partnerships. We also want to send a message to criminals, letting them know that our neighborhoods are organized and fighting back!
The event is free and takes place in the Home Depot parking lot. As a national event, cities across the US will all celebrate a Night Out Against Crime on Tuesday.
And don’t forget to turn your porch light on from 5 to 7 p.m. Lights on means lights out for crime!
You said that there will be a variety of activities?
Jennifer: Binky the Clown is returning again and is always a favorite. Binky, who is actually Cleveland Police Sergeant Bartos, dresses up like a police officer and it’s so cute. He strolls through the crowd and does magic tricks, balloon animals, and more. There will be free face painting and glitter tattoos, and community organizations will be on hand with giveaways and information.
Our Dunk a Second District Cleveland Police Officer tank will be back and it’s always very popular. It’s a fundraiser for the officers’ Community Relations Committee. The children’s Safety House/Smoke House will be at the event, as well as the Cleveland Police Mobile Command Center, Cuyahoga County prisoner transport bus, Bomb Squad robot, SWAT mobile unit, and more.
What type of food vendors will be present?
Jennifer: Jimmy John’s will be giving away free sub samples for four hours, and Steak ‘n Shake will be doing root beer floats. Target always steps up to the plate and will be serving food and providing the condiments, paper products and more. Goldwerks gave us a monetary donation to help us purchase the hotdogs. The City of Cleveland Community Relations Department will provide food and drinks, as well, and there will be free Coca-Cola products.
Will there be entertainment?
Jennifer: This year’s entertainment includes Julia DeBurgos, Perlas del Caribe, the Sho-Jo-Ji Japanese Dancers, the Shao Lin Institute, Fresh VIBE, and the Cleveland Contemporary Chinese Culture Association. The Sammy De Leon Orchestra will close the evening at 9 p.m. and they are great! The Orchestra is being sponsored by All Sweep, Inc.
Tell me about Operation Child Protect.
Jennifer: We offer this every year, and it is a partnership between the Cuyahoga County Prosecutors Office and the FBI. It’s a three-step process. Children will be fingerprinted and photographed, and law enforcement professionals will take a swab. If something happens to the child, it gives law enforcement valuable information to help find the child quickly. The parents will receive a take-home kit.
You said that you are doing a fundraiser?
Jennifer: This year we are selling snow cones. All proceeds will help to fund next year’s event.
Tell me about the grant you received.
Jennifer: This year, Target at Steelyard Commons approached us about a grant program for safety called Target Blue Grant. In order to apply, you have to be a non-profit, so Tremont West Development Corporation applied on our behalf. Two grants were awarded in Ohio, and we were one of the recipients. The $750 is being used to fund this year’s event.
How many people do you hope to draw?
Jennifer: We hope to draw 5,000 people. Everyone is welcome!.
