JEFFERSON PARK SPARKLES ON THE FIRST DAY OF WINTER 2019/2020Submitted by Satinder P S Puri on Sat, 12/21/2019 - 18:39.
JEFFERSON PARK, IN CLEVELAND, OHIO, SPARKLES ON THE FIRST DAY OF WINTER 2019/2020
Saturday, December 21, 2019 was the official first day of Winter even though we have had a few very cold days during the past Autumn.
IT WAS TRULY A BEAUTIFUL DAY!
The sun was out in full glory.
And the snow covered park was sparkling. PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE PARK:
I have been snow-bound for the past few days. Being a senior citizen I don’t go out when the sidewalks are covered with snow or ice. I am afraid of falling down and ending up in the ER.
With a temperature of 35 deg. F and rising to around 50 – i went out around 11:30 am with my shopping cart to do some grocery shopping.
Before I went out – I went to our attic and snapped what is close enough to an aerial photograph – the first one in this post.
Our house is on Cooley Avenue and faces the south side of the park.
On the way I went around the park – snapping photographs.
The trees were almost leafless. The snow fences were in place -- somehow making the park look less inviting.
It was all quiet except for the planes flying overhead.
No kids were playing in the playground or in the basketball courts.
TENNIS COURTS:
The tennis courts, where the nets were removed a few days ago, had patches of snow and were wet – otherwise I would have played a few hours of solo tennis.
I took a few photograph with my tennis racket and the JIMMY DIMORA PUBLIC SQUARE sign – which I carry everywhere – not so much as a protest sign now – but as a work of Performance Art. I opposed the renovation of the historic downtown Public Square. Because the renovation project was mired in corruption, I nicknamed the Square as Jimmy Dimora Public Square after Jimmy Dimora – a Cuyahoga County Commissioner who was charged with corruption and sentenced to 28-years in jail. If the project was mired in corruption – what better name than Jimmy Dimora Public Square. The sign has the red, white, and blue patriotic colors and a cryptic message that invites curiousity, comments, and conversation. The sign has been seen by thousands. It is on the Internet, on Youtube, and in the records of The Plain Dealer. I have been carrying it after the project was completed in June 2016.
EXCUSE ME, WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT TODAY?
On my way to Marcs and back – I spoke with around a dozen people. Except for one, no one was aware of the significance of the day.
SUNRISE, SUNSET:
According to official records, today the sunrise was at 7:49 am and sunset at 4:59 pm -- giving us a 9-hour and 10 min. long day – the shortest day of the year.
The days will slowly start getting longer – giving us more sunlight (on clear days).
St. Patrick’s day is on Tuesday, March 17, 2020.
Spring will (officially) arrive on Wednesday, March 20, 2020. The longest day will occur on Friday, June 21, 2020 -- when we will have a 15-hour and 11-min. long day.
Then the days will start getting shorter – and then longer again -- in an endless dance in a mysterious Universe.
Enjoy the winter.
Let us hope it is a mild one.
