DIKE 14 NATURE PRESERVE COMMITTEE

PLEASE TRY TO ATTEND THIS IMPORTANT PUBLIC MEETING TO SHOW, BY YOUR PRESENCE AND/OR YOUR PUBLIC COMMENTS, YOUR CONCERNS ABOUT THE DESTRUCTION OF THE E. 55TH ST. LAKEFRONT STATE PARK AND MARINA, AND ITS REPLACEMENT WITH A 200-ACRE INDUSTRIAL PORT FACILITY!

TELL THE ARMY CORPS TO BUILD ITS NEXT CDF AT E. 55TH ST. FOR PARK (NOT PORT) PURPOSES (ALTERNATIVE 4), OR AT ONE OF THE OTHER ALTERNATIVES, SUCH AS SITE 2 AT THE WEST HARBOR ENTRANCE/BREAKWALL.

THE PORT SHOULD STAY WHERE IT IS!

The Army Corps’ Draft DMMP & EIS proposes the construction of Cleveland’s next Confined Disposal Facility (CDF) in Lake Erie for dredged sediments taken primarily from Cleveland’s federal navigation channels.

  • The Army Corps of Engineers issued its Draft Dredge Material Management Plan (DMMP) & Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Cleveland Harbor on August 19, 2009.
  • There is a requisite 45-day public review/comment period that began on September 11, 2009.
  • A public information session is also required.
  • The Army Corps recommends East 55th St. as the PREFERRED site for a 150+ acre CDF, where currently is located the Cleveland Lakefront State Park & Marina
  • The Draft DMMP/EIS suggests three CDF site locations, and two CDF configurations for each location, for a total of six “alternatives” for comparison and review, including two different potential plans for a CDF at East 55th Street (one for use as a future Port facility and one that could be geared for future park and recreation uses).
  • You can review the Corps’ DMMP/EIS document online at http://www.lrb.usace.army.mil/missions/cleveland/index.html or at two libraries: Cleveland Public Main Library, 325 Superior Ave. and Cleveland Public Addison Branch Library, 6901 Superior Ave.
  • To obtain a hardcopy of this Corps document, contact Christine Cardus, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Buffalo District) at 716-879-4130 or Christine [dot] M [dot] Cardus [at] usace [dot] army [dot] mil
  •  Written comments can be submitted to the Army Corps any time before the October 26, 2009 deadline,   either by e-mail (to Christine [dot] M [dot] Cardus [at] usace [dot] army [dot] mil) or by US mail (to Frank O’Connor, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, 1776 Niagara Street, Buffalo, New York 14207-3199

WRITTEN COMMENTS ON THE ARMY CORPS' DMMP/EIS FOR THE NEXT CLEVELAND CDF MAY BE SUBMITTED UNTIL OCTOBER 26TH TO THE ARMY CORPS.

The DIKE 14 NATURE PRESERVE COMMITTEE welcomes and is open to all persons and organizations interested in the conservation of the existing 88-acre Lake Erie coastal wildlife area at Dike 14, for the benefit of wildlife and people.  Diverse habitats at Dike 14 Nature Preserve provide essential sanctuary for significant numbers and diversity of migratory birds as well as refuge for nesting and resident birds and other wildlife.  Unique to Cleveland's shoreline this wildlife area provides the only quality habitat for migratory birds along 100-miles of urbanized Lake Erie coast between Huron and Mentor.  The Dike 14 Nature Preserve Committee advocates the preservation of Dike 14 as a nature preserve with judicious public access.  Since January 2001, the Dike 14 Nature Preserve Committee has functioned as a clearinghouse, an information source and a point of contact for Dike 14 issues.
