Cleveland Public Library welcomes critically-acclaimed author Connie Briscoe to its Writers and Readers Series, Sunday, February 11 at 2 p.m. Free and open to the public, the event will take place at the Main Library, Louis Stokes Wing Auditorium, E. 6th Street and Superior Avenue. Born with a hereditary hearing loss, Briscoe never let her disability derail her from her life and career aspirations. Although she attempted to write a novel several times, it wasn’t until after pushing ahead in her career as an editor, traveling and pursuing other passions, that she attempted a second time to write a novel. What emerged in 1995 was the bestselling Sisters and Lovers. After publishing Sisters and Lovers, Briscoe continued to follow her passion, writing. She has published four books since her debut; three which follow the themes of relationships of strong African-American women and their ability to persevere despite the challenges and obstacles life has put before them, and one historical, A Long Way from Home, based on her heritage. A Long Way from Home was nominated for an NAAACP Image Award. Briscoe is working on her first non-fiction work, Jewels: 50 Phenomenal Women Over 50, which will take her core theme used in fiction and showcase celebrities and regular women dealing with life’s obstacles. Such notable women featured include Ruby Dee, Eleanor Holmes Norton, and Nikki Giovanni, among others. Briscoe lives in rural Maryland where she enjoys the setting for her evolving writing career.
