Cell Phone Numbers Going Public

Submitted by Susan Miller on Sun, 03/02/2008 - 09:47.

REMINDER....all cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies tomorrow and you will start to receive sale calls and you will be charged for these calls.

To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone:1-888-382-1222.

It is the National Do Not Call List. It will only take a minute of your time. It blocks your number for five (5) years. You must call from the cell phone number you want to have blocked. You cannot call from a different phone number.

Help others by passing this on to all your friends. It takes about 20
seconds...

(sub)urban legend

If you’ve received an e-mail telling you that your cell phone is about to be assaulted by telemarketing calls as a result of a new cell phone number database, rest assured that this is not the case. Telemarketing to cell phone numbers has always been illegal in most cases and will continue to be so. In response to recent e-mail campaigns urging consumers to place their cell phone numbers on the National Do Not Call Registry, the Federal Trade Commission and Federal Communications Commission issue this advisory to give consumers the facts.

Based on TransUnion involvement... TRUE

Considering the infringement on all personal privacy under the Bush administration, and the involvement of TransUnion reported in the Snopes link above, it is safe to say the Sub/Urban legend that our cell phones are currently being used to monitor us is guaranteed. Disrupt IT

thanks Jeff - now what about unwanted text msgs?

Thanks Jeff. I'll send this link back to Betsey Merkel who sent the alert to me.

I routinely receive text messages that seem to be sent to the wrong number. Is there something I can do about this? I rarely text message (being an older person), but I see the charges on the bill. I guess this is just par for the course.

I am thinking of dumping the landline since I rarely receive calls in the first place and the calls I get on the landline in the past weeks have almost all been robo calls.

I have had this phone number for almost 30 years, so it is tough to think of dropping it and having the wall phone in the kitchen become more of a sculpture of technology past, but I suppose it is time to move along...

De-Activate Your Texting

Susan,

Contact your service provider and tell them that you want your texting de-activated. Don't take no for an answer, as they may well try to talk you out of doing so.

Threaten to go to another provider if you have to, or ask the sales agent helping you to connect you with their manager.

You pay too much money to these people for them to play dumb with you.

Good Luck

FCC's number portability

FCC's number portability requirements say you can port your landline number to your cell phone.

Ask your cell provider AND your landline provider... and cut the cord.

and about the texts

1) give text a chance!
2) I get 0 stray texts. If it's the same folks over and over again, call them and ask to be more careful. If it's lots of randoms, maybe you have a number that used to belong to a very popular person (dealer/pimp/councilperson?) Refer to my previous comment, and make your old number new.

Yes,unfortunately, there

Yes,unfortunately, there have been some who have tried to take advantage of consumers so you should be careful and check the legitimacy of Do Not Call lists to protect your privacy and personal information. 800 Numbers

This is silly, not only do

This is silly, not only do the telemarketing companies call us to present their products and offers, they're also charging US for this. I feel like I'm being cheated twice and I didn't even do anything wrong. Thanks for the provided phone number, I'll get to my VoIP phones right away to call, this can't go on.
