Kevin Cronin's blogCensus Data and Cleveland GrowthSubmitted by Kevin Cronin on Mon, 03/29/2010 - 12:28.
A quick note about the census -- By now, we've all seen the cute advertising to encourage censis compliance...it's about accuracy, it's about getting our fair share of federal money, it's about maintaining appropriate representation in Congress. Here's an online tool to see how we're doing. With nation-wide and state-wide compliance in the 34-35% rate, Cleveland response rates average in the 10-20% category. Well, to be fair, Cleveland, like many other areas, has a lot of factors that suggest low compliance r Support Cycling and Pedestrian Access for the Proposed I-90 Bridge (And Get A Great View Along the Way)Submitted by Kevin Cronin on Sun, 11/29/2009 - 23:23.
Despite public support and an obligation to evaluate cycling and pedestrian access to the proposed Interstate 90/71 Bridge from tremont to downtown, the Ohio Department of Transportation refused to do so.In response, a bunch of cycling and community groups took on the responsibilities ODOT dropped. Come out next Sunday, December 6th, and learn about an exciting vision for a cycling and pedestrian lane on the bridge and why an exciting, beautiful path (along with a place to enjoy the view) to connect the towpath and downtown makes sense for Northeast Ohio
Social Media – Risks and Rewards, even for the MilitarySubmitted by Kevin Cronin on Tue, 08/04/2009 - 13:22.
The US Marine Corps decision to ban social media, citing concerns for operation and mission security, is an issue every employer wrestles with, but banning social media is on excessive response, one that forfeits important value for social media, including military recruiting. Employers, military or otherwise, should develop fine-tuned policies on social media, not comprehensive bans or unqualified endorsements. Backstage at the Ohio Theatre with Cleveland Opera for Verdi's FalstaffSubmitted by Kevin Cronin on Wed, 06/17/2009 - 18:20.
It's an interesting experiment, live blogging from the final dress rehearsal of Verdi's opera "Fallstaff. We've been promised full access - backstage, the house, conversations with staff and actors (as long as they are willing), but for now, The stage manager’s called “places, five minutes”, so I’m going off to the seats. I don’t want to miss anything.

Please join us on a fundraiser to remind NE Ohio of a progressive past and help reinvigorate a promising future. Prior to the Civil War and emancipation, "Hope" was the code name for Cleveland for emancipating slaves seeking support in the final stop before Canada

Praise and Thanks for Lux Interior of the CrampsSubmitted by Kevin Cronin on Fri, 02/06/2009 - 20:55.
How many saw the news (or noticed it at all) that “Lux Interior, frontman of "psychobilly" pioneers the Cramps, died yesterday in Glendale, California” and realized it was another example of Ohio creativity let loose on the world?

Invest in Cycling and Walking to Restore NE Ohio NeighborhoodsSubmitted by Kevin Cronin on Sun, 01/18/2009 - 15:05.
Northeast Ohio has the opportunity to rebuild our neighborhoods and by offering healthier and more active transportation choices, we can create thriving neighborhoods where people want to live. However, the current transportation network leaves us way behind the curve. New investment to support walking and biking will create pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods, an important step to get the nation back on track. Fortunately, it's a cost-effective step we can take in these tight financial times. Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich and the SenateSubmitted by Kevin Cronin on Tue, 01/06/2009 - 01:02.
I can't resist weighing in on the Illinois Senate appointment, the "go slow" Illinois legislature and events that can lead to the loss of a Senate Democrat seat. The common refrain is that Governor Blagojevich has lawfully appointed an individual who should be allowed to take the Senate seat. But if the Governor had been recorded and was awaiting prosecution for some other horrendous violation, we wouldn't be doubting the Senate's ability, desire and power to deny the seat. Bail Outs, Fiscal Crisis -- How Strong Are Our Cities?Submitted by Kevin Cronin on Mon, 12/29/2008 - 16:08.
While on the subject of cities, some analysts look to the nation's economic woes, it's impact on tax receipts for cities and foresee municipal bankruptcies growing at alarming rates. Cities may need to look to municipal bankruptcy, chapter 9 of the bankruptcy code, to protect themselves and taxpayers. We haven't seen this since the Orange County bankruptcy in 1994, which lost over $1.5 billion. Councilman Polensek Should ResignSubmitted by Kevin Cronin on Mon, 12/29/2008 - 16:03.
I never thought Councilman Mike Polensek was a bad guy, maybe a frustrated, burned out, partially-jaded reformer facing difficult tasks in Cleveland, but not a bad guy. However, in my mind, you can't justify the latest problem involving his asking a local development nonprofit organization to buy a house for him while he secured financing. He can say he gave the nonprofit a modest profit for helping he can say it was only a short-term thing and he can say he only did it for his mom, but....

Ohio Film Industry - Other States Move Further, While Ohio Governor Rejects A First Step Ahead With His VetoSubmitted by Kevin Cronin on Fri, 12/19/2008 - 20:31.
In the same week that Ohio Governor Strickland vetoes a bill to create a tax credit for those creating film and video production jobs in Ohio, the Illinois Governor (yeah, that guy, the one who's been in the news lately), signed a bill to expand their 20% tax credit to 30%. Do you think he knows something that Governor Strickland does not?
Auto Bailout -- Sell More Cars More InexpensivelySubmitted by Kevin Cronin on Tue, 12/09/2008 - 15:37.
Perhaps it’s heresy here in NE Ohio, but I'm wondering how the auto industry bail out will succeed. Ultimately, the car companies need to sell more cars, but no one is forecasting American consumers are going to be in a better position to buy a year or more from now. If so, why aren't the big three going to be just as vulnerable next year as they are now, with the US squandering what few resources we have in the interim? ( categories: )

Tech Superstars Hit the Road for ObamaSubmitted by Kevin Cronin on Sat, 10/11/2008 - 00:02.
There's something about tech entrepreneurs talking to superstar tech entrepreneurs that is, as Sarah Palin might say, "so gosh, darn excitin'." While I could have done without people getting so braggy about Columbus and a booming tech industry, but I was excited to meet some tech superstars, who hit the road on behalf of Barack Obamma's presidential campaign at an event called 2.Ohio. Community Organizing Matters!Submitted by Kevin Cronin on Thu, 09/04/2008 - 13:58.
I try not to get to worked by politicians - hype and hysteria just come naturally to them -- but last night, I heard politicians criticize Barack Obama for his work as a community organizer and that hurt. You see, I did that too. When Governor Sarah Palin and former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani disparaged community organizing efforts, they belittled my efforts and those of countless others too.

Corsair, a private pot of money and investors that seems poised to bail out National City, is an interesting development, but if you're concerned about housing and local investment, where is the encouragement for the future in a bank that got into this mess, at least in part, through poor lending practices and weak management oversight on home lending?

Connect the Dots for Bill Clinton's Friends, Cashing In, Philanthropic Fundraising and Undermining FreedomSubmitted by Kevin Cronin on Mon, 03/03/2008 - 23:45.
Sometimes the intersection of politics and policy is comfortable, sometimes uncomfortable, and sometimes you have to "connect the dots." One very uncomfortable "dot connecting" involves President Bill Clinton, philanthropic fundraising, the uranium industry and Clinton's private activity that ran contrary to US foreign policy and reinforced a country, Kazakhstan, with an antipathy to human rights and open media.

The AMP Contract is The Wrong Deal for ClevelandSubmitted by Kevin Cronin on Sun, 02/24/2008 - 20:07.
Cleveland City Council should rescind its involvement in AMP-Ohio's proposed coal-fired utility in southern Ohio. A fifty year commitment to coal is the wrong direction, for Cleveland Public Power (CPP), its customers and the environment. Instead, CPP should develop a comprehensive plan for energy need and energy sources, that includes efforts to reduce demand through conservation, insulation, wind, solar and other alternative sources. |
