In defense of the cormorant -- and ethical journalismSubmitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Fri, 05/19/2006 - 08:54.
I was so offended by the article the Plain Dealer ran on the cover Tuesday: "Ravenous birds facing last meal in Ohio soon" that I feel the need to post some factual inormation about cormorants. It is not that I necessarily oppose reducing the population of these birds -- what the article is essentially about -- its the over the top, purple prose I find insulting. i.e. "the cormorants look like prehistoric lizard-birds designed by Edgar Allan Poe on a bad night." Is this a phrase that belongs in Cleveland's daily paper or a cheap tabloid? Why does reporter Bill Sloat want to make us hate these birds, and does he think readers are so impressionable? Can't he just tell us the facts? There is actually an interesting story here -- about the human impact on nature. ( categories: )

See map: Google Maps Dr. Gregory Eastwood, Interim President Introduces Himself to the Case CommunitySubmitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Tue, 04/18/2006 - 12:40.
On Monday April 17th at 4 p.m. in Strosacker Auditorium Dr. Gregory Eastwood, Interim President, introduced himself to the Case Community (students, faculty and staff). The event was also broadcast live via webcast. I tried to listen to the webcast, which was frustrating due technology problems (I am not sure if it was on my end or Case's). I listened again the next day thanks to the archived copy -- much more satisfying result. If you missed out please check the link. ( categories: )

See map: Google Maps "No Umbrella" Screening at City HallSubmitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Mon, 03/27/2006 - 23:30.
The Cleveland Film Festival screening of Laura Paglin's documentary "No Umbrella -- Election Day" quickly sold out, but those who were n't able to get tickets got another chance in the rotunda of City Hall on Monday night. Free and open to the public, the film played at 6 p.m., before a city council meeting. About 100 people were there. Paglin is a local director who has been getting a lot of attention lately. The subject of her short documentary, which recently played at Sundance, is an election day fiasco in ward 7, that took place last November. The "star" of the film is councilwoman Fannie Lewis, who fought heroically for her constituents right to vote that day, when the board of elections failed to provide enough workers and ballots at one poling station. Hundert ResignsSubmitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Thu, 03/16/2006 - 13:15.
the following was sent out in an email this morning to the CASE community ... PRESIDENT HUNDERT'S LETTER TO THE CASE WESTERN RESERVE COMMUNITY Dear Members of the Case Western Reserve University Community, Last night I informed our Board of Trustees that I will step down as President of the University effective September 1, 2006. I have been tremendously grateful for the Board's support throughout my four years; they are an extraordinary group of people. There is much I would still like to accomplish for our university, but I have reluctantly concluded that the continuing tension on campus is too distracting to the advancement of our university. I believe a change in leadership will provide the best opportunity for the many important groups across our community to come together and build on the progress we have made in recent years. I would like to call on everyone to take this moment to join together to advance Case Western Reserve as one great university. Go to http://blog.case.edu/casepoint/ to continue letter. NEO Car ShopperSubmitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Mon, 03/06/2006 - 14:19.
How does one shop for a car online? I am going to find out! I need a new car. I think I know approximately what I am looking for -- excellent safety rating, high fuel efficiency, attractive design, comfortable enough for long road trips, roomy enough to carry skiis, bikes or some large piece of art. I'm convinced I should buy foreign (unless someone can convince me otherwise) because what I hate most is taking my car in for repairs often. What ever I buy I plan to keep it 10 years or more.
Enlightened Athens in the Age of JeffersonSubmitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Fri, 03/03/2006 - 12:52.
03/09/2006 - 16:00 03/09/2006 - 18:00 Etc/GMT-4 A lecture by Rachel Sternberg, Ph.D., Assitant Professor of Classics. Educated 18th-century Europeans thought of ancient Athens as an enlightened age much like their own, where one could observe the intellectual and moral progress of the human mind. Did Thomas Jefferson and other Founders view Athens in the same way? If so, how did they construe the contradition between slavery and humane ideal in Athens - a contradition that they themselves faced in America? In 1788, the French numismatist Jean-Jaques Barthelemy published an eight volume work, The Travels of Anacharsis the Younger in Greece, told from the point of view of an imaginary Scythian visiting Greece in the fourth century B.C. It was a huge success, comprising 40 editions, and Thomas Jefferson purchased a set for his library at Monticello. Anacharsis, then, allows us to explore the historical imagination of the Enlightenment through a work that crossed the Atlantic and shaped thinking in the New World as well as in the Old. This talk focuses on how Barthelemy dealt with Athenian slavery and judicial slave torture: his selection and handling of the ancient evidence for those institutions, and his attempt to reconcile them with the brilliance of Athens. Searching for a king cake in ClevelandSubmitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Mon, 02/27/2006 - 12:48.
Tomorrow is not just another Tuesday -- it is Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras! So I thought it would be fun to have a king cake. The West Side Market was the first place I decided to look because there are several great bakeries there. I searched the market Saturday afternoon. No king cakes at Vera's, none at Cake either. The only place that came close was Theresa's (D-6).
History of Sleep Research Lecture Drew a Diverse Crowd to CIASubmitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Thu, 02/23/2006 - 16:45.
Although Dr. William C. Dement stated that his lecture was not about the role of dreams in creativity and art, the painting The Nightmare, by Fuseli usually comes to mind when I think of dreams. I am an art historian, but I think many people associate dreams with artistic inspiration. ( categories: )
TRUST IS NOT ANONYMOUSSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Sun, 02/19/2006 - 21:25.
Betsey, It didn't dawn on me until after I had finished commenting regarding the network map that I had blown the main point. The reason names are critical in a network map is because trust cannot be anonymous. "building trust" - we hear it at all the meetings, we hear it from Jack, from Valdis, from Norm, from Ed, from Tom, from George, from Berlin, from William - but you can't build trust with anonymity. We need names and faces - lots of them - like in high school - to connect to and listen too. Then trust will come.

See map: Google Maps Taco RiceSubmitted by robataka on Sat, 12/31/2005 - 11:14.
Last night the kids made taco rice for dinner. An easy and delicious meal...though the pic below really doesn't do it justice.
Taco Rice is supposedly a Okinawan invention. I would imagine, though I will say that I don't actually know this to be true, that the Okinawans picked up "tacos" from the U.S. Military there, but seeing that they probably didn't have access to taco shells back when Taco Rice was invented(don't ask because I don't know), so they used Japanese steamed rice. All you need is the ingredients for Tacos(shredded lettuce, cheese, taco-spiced ground beef, tomatoes, and taco sauce) and dump it on a plate of steamed rice.
