The Center for Rural Pennsylvania published today research directly linking the success of broadband to socio- and economic revitalization, and the need for innovative public policy. The design of flexible, resilient public policy will happen with high levels of civic engagement guiding local municipal government. A combo of collaborative leadership and community strengths.

On Facilitating Regional Economic Development with Advance Northeast OhioSubmitted by Sudhir Kade on Mon, 05/05/2008 - 17:55.
I thought I'd share some reflections after just spending Cinco de Mayo facilitating dialogues around regional economic development in Akron, Ohio. I, like so many other colleagues who have participated in various phases of the Voices and Choices process had my fair share of reservations and issues with various aspects of the two-year, multi-million dollar investment and experience. While I found great value in working hard to facilitate regional dialogues with a healthy mix of participants representing diverse demographics, I learned firsthand how difficult it is to drive meaningful outcomes from such activity. I, like so many others, was very candid about the many difficulties endured and faced during the process - perhaps the most prolific of which was a failure to have the mechanisms in place to capture the heightened energy and activation of the masses in an effective and timely manner to drive meaningful and positive outcomes. A candid conversation I had today with Advance Northeast Ohio's communications director, Chris Thompson, completely validated my feelings, as he was in complete agreement on this point. I laud Chris for such candor and really appreciated his astute comments.

One of the few organizations in Cleveland that seems to have truly meritorious objectives is The Cleveland Council on World Affairs.

DANCE VIDEO OF THE DAY - LINEAR MOTORSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Tue, 03/04/2008 - 19:23.
Here is a dance video which NEO should watch and understand - and understand how to program. A dance that union workers, and all workers, need to learn.
BALLOT REFLECTIONS: CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OHIO - PARTY MACHINE OR REAL CHOICE?Submitted by Jeff Buster on Sat, 03/01/2008 - 12:05.
I voted absentee – to give me time with my ballot to consider each candidate – and I found that many candidates have no internet record whatsoever. That’s a bad sign for NEO.

CLIPPER WIND TURBINE GEAR FAILURES STOP "STEELWINDS" IN LACKAWANNA , NEW YORKSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Thu, 01/03/2008 - 13:35.
The Buffalo News reports today that the complicated gearboxes on the Clipper wind turbines in Lackawanna, New York have caused the facility to shut down. The photo above was taken in September of 2007 and shows the eight Clipper turbines on the old Bethlehem slag heaps with Buffalo in the left hand background.

ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGOSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Thu, 12/27/2007 - 22:36.
When I visited The Art Institute of Chicago there was an icy rain coming in off of Lake Michigan. The sky was slate gray and at two in the afternoon the headlights and tail lights of the cars on South Michigan Avenue reflected off the shiny wet asphalt as I crossed. Getting inside the warm lobby of the museum felt good. A $12.00 ticket provides entry to the galleries. I hadn’t been here before – I had pleasant surprises ahead.
ROLDO BARTIMOLE ON BREWED FRESH DAILY - POSITIVELY CLEVELAND + PLUSSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Thu, 12/13/2007 - 15:06.
BREWED FRESH DAILY HAS A THREAD which carries a discussion which I believe it is important for everyone in NEO to read. The thread is especially important now that the City of Cleveland is looking desperately for immediate cash-back from the taxpayers’ UDAG loans.

ADAM HARVEY SPEAKS TRUTH TO POWERSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Mon, 11/12/2007 - 21:32.
There’s a little mystery on the plywood construction wall around the Marcel Breuer designed Ameritrust Tower in Cleveland, Ohio.
CIVIC INTEREST IN BREUER TOWER CAN CAN COMMISSIONERS HAGAN & DIMORA & TURN OVER GOV'T IN CUYAHOGASubmitted by Jeff Buster on Fri, 11/09/2007 - 17:40.
Neither the Gund Foundation nor the Cleveland Foundation made a peep to preserve the Breuer, and two of our County Commissioners (with the exception of Mr. Lawson-Jones) are (at best) too ignorant to appreciate the international architectural jewel which Jacobs bought and sold to the County (The Breuer Tower, like the Coast Guard Station, shows Jacobs has erudite architectural taste?).
Envisioning and Executing a Holistic East Cleveland TransformationSubmitted by Sudhir Kade on Thu, 11/01/2007 - 15:26.
Years have past since our REALNEO team first presented a vision for a holistic and sustainable East Cleveland transformation at a town hall meeting held by former Mayor Saratha Goggins. Since then, our team has pushed forward with a diverse group of advocates for positive change and today we are poised to introduce many of the concepts we originally envisioned as part of the Star development project.
SEARCHING FOR CLEVELAND'S SOULSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Mon, 10/15/2007 - 10:20.
About a month ago a hapless judge in Cleveland, under intense pressure from a community posse, sentenced two young men to 2000 hours of community service (no affirmation intended/rebutted re: Planetizen viewpoint) to be served over 5 years.
WiFi Comes to RoxburySubmitted by Norm Roulet on Thu, 09/20/2007 - 20:07.
We're close enough to our move in to 1894 Roxbury, in East Cleveland, that we have had our DSL service switched over from Ohio City to East Cleveland. Whereas on Clinton, at W. 45th Street, there were several WiFi signals in the air, my new POP on Roxbury is the only signal in the digital darkness of this corner of East Cleveland.
CIVIC SPACE IS EQUITY BASEDSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Sun, 09/16/2007 - 11:33.
I have been attending and photographing events at each end of the NEO citizen spectrum. What I mean is that I have attended Cuyahoga County Commissioner's meetings - which I would propose is one of many events at the top of what I'll define as the "civic pyramid", and I’ve gone to classes with individual citizens at the Shaker Lakes Regional Nature Center (the raccoon rabies bait story is centered around the Nature Center woods) -which I propose to define as one of many citizen events at the base, the foundation, of the "civic pyramid". Another example of an event at the top of the "civic pyramid" would be the Cuyahoga County Wind Energy Task Force meeting which was held at the Key Center September 13 and which I will post about shortly. And another example of an event at the foundation of the pyramid is instructor Donald Isom’s (on left in "Rehab is for Quiters" shirt) weekly Krump at the Heights Youth Club pictured above.

Ubuntu 7.04 fully certified, pre-installed and supported on a range of Dell productsSubmitted by Norm Roulet on Sun, 08/12/2007 - 21:36.
I was up at the Ubuntu website downloading the latest version to my ThinkPad (from a mirror site at OSUOSL, which I hopefully thought would be Ohio State University Open Source Lab, but was of course Oregon State) and I noticed a promo that "Ubuntu on Dell now available in the UK, Germany and France" with support from Canonical... one promo said this is available in the USA as well. This is a major development for Linux and for Ubuntu, and for open source development in the world. For the first time ever, I am a Dell fan... I'll be interested how pricing will differ between comparable Dell Ubuntu and Windows boxes... especially after you add Office (v.s. free OpenOffice)... more below and here.
