The topic of the 05.03.05 Tuesday at REI was "Exploring New Models of Funding the Civic Space" - a panel discussion at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History about what are the existing models, how can we improve effectiveness, and what are some of the challenges we need to address for the future? "You can make yourself a force on any issue in the city," was how Jones Day's Steve Brogan set himself apart from Squire Sanders' Fred Nance at their rare face-off at the City Club Wednesday. "Do not wait for older leaders," Brogan exhorted his audience.

The 04.11.05 Ohio Venture Association (OVA) luncheon at the Cleveland Union Club featured City of Cleveland Senior Executive for Technology Development, aka “tech czar�, Michael DeAloia. Michael is responsible for expanding information technology focused business development in Cleveland, and his results to date are impressive, as highlighted below. Preceding Michael’s talk was a “5-Minute Forum� by Anthony Margida, Ph.D., the Battelle Company Formation Advisor to GLITeC, making this a very important, tech-centric innovation immersion event.

An insightful opinion editorial in the 04.15.05 New York Times declares "Bush Disarms, Unilaterally", claiming over the past few years the US has abandoned the new economy war. The author states what he "can't figure out about the Bush team is why an administration that is so focused on projecting U.S. military strength abroad has taken such little interest in America's economic competitiveness at home - the underlying engine of our strength" - ultimately the question posed is why Americans are allowing ourselves to fall behind the rest of the world in deploying information technology research and access to our masses. The same reasoning can be applied to our homeland economy for Northeast Ohio - why do we allow 100,000s of area residents to stagnate in the old economy, divided apart from the digital economy?

The second annual NOTACON, the brain child of Paul Schneider(AKA Froggy), his wife Jodie(AKA Tyger) as well as the support of their business partner last year, Brandon "Kaospunk" Knight, is being held at the Lakeside Holiday in this weekend(04/08-04/10). This technology, arts and music event is the place to be for hackers, and underground music and arts lovers. I attended a few of sessions yesterday that I really enjoyed. How do personal characteristics such as
intelligence, education and wealth contribute to disparate health outcomes?

Linda S. Gottfredson, Ph.D., professor
of education at the University of Delaware, and co-director of the
Delaware-Johns Hopkins Project for the Study of Intelligence and Society, will
discuss this and related issues at the next program in the lecture series,
"Prescriptions for Change: Reducing Health Disparities in Our Community,"
presented by the Roundtable Community Council, a program of the Greater
Cleveland Partnership, and the Center for Health Disparities, a collaboration
between MetroHealth Medical Center and Case Western Reserve University.

The program will be held from 7:30-9:30 a.m., Wed., April 13, at The
City Club of Cleveland, 850 Euclid Avenue. It is sponsored by the St. Luke's and
Mt. Sinai Health Care Foundations. Tickets are $15 for City Club members and
nonmembers.

Dr.
Gottfredson has written extensively on the impact of general intelligence on
personal functioning in different life domains, including in school, on the job
and in health self-care. Among her recent publications is an article in Current Directions in Psychological
Science,
co-written in 2004 with Ian J. Deary of the University of
Edinburgh (Scotland), examining the theory that intelligence (as measured by an
IQ-type test) enhances individuals' care of their own health, because it
represents learning, reasoning and problem-solving skills useful in preventing
chronic disease and accidental injury and in adhering to complex treatment
regimens.

Last week, the UN issued an important report on the future of our environment. The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment is focused on improving our insights into the environmental consequences of development.

The third of my students this semester who has taken on a topically-focused blogging assignment is Jennifer Mack. She is a double major in music and management, and she still finds time to track down really interesting references to music in business contexts, and to the business of the music industry.

Northern California has a unique combination of incredible brain power, the world's highest quality, connected places, and innovation networks - and its booming'. It rode through the bubble-burst with little disruption and now ideas, deals and dollars are flowing freely. The sun is shining, the skies are blue and the limits. While this place and reality are far removed from NEO, there are connections to make and lessons to learn - there is knowledge to tranfer. Details to post here.

Last fall, Lori Vanelli was an enthusiastic early adopter of the livejournal assignment for MGMT 250. This spring for MGMT 251, she found coming up with a topical focus for her blog writing a bit of a challenge, and I'm pleased that her tone of slightly irreverent reflection on herself and others has been retained as she has come to focus on the young of the working world. Over the course of February and March she has written about twixters, boomerang kids, quarterlife crises, and how she and her peers perceive themselves and the challenges that face them. Lori's livejournal is a great introduction to the NEO blogging scene from the point of view of a 20something, and I'm sure she'll stick with it even after the semester ends.

Ryan has chosen to focus on real estate management issues, and would like to get feedback on the posts he made in February and in March. His post about online marketing strategies is particularly interesting. Your comments on any of the posts would be most welcome... part of what Ryan needs to do for his project assignment is to so some experiments with how to build traffic to his blog, so if you have any suggestions for him, I'm sure he would appreciate hearing from you.

The 03.16.05 Community of Minds get-together featured Jurgen Faust, Chair of TIME (The Integrated Multimedia Environment) at the world-class Cleveland Institute of Art. Community of Minds is the longest-standing and most innovative entrepreneurial networking initiatives in NEO, providing attendees highly valuable, free, bi-monthly insight sharing meet-ups at the Case University Dively Center, held with support from the Center for Regional Economic Issues (REI) and Thompson Hine law firm. At this March meeting, Jurgen Faust offered important insight on developing NEO as a "Future Center" of design excellence.

Association entrepreneurship networking lunch at the Union
Club assembled a remarkable mix of entrepreneurs, venture funders and
entrepreneurship champions to build relationships and gain perspectives on the
state of opportunity and momentum of collaboration increasingly defining the
Northeast Ohio business community. That theme was well expressed by the
presence and focus of keynote presenter Mike Stubler, Managing Director of seed
and early stage venture capital firm Draper Triangle Ventures,
which just established an office in downtown Cleveland at 737 Bolivar Road -
also home of Jump Start. The topic of Mike's talk was “Why NEO is attractive to
Early Stage Investors�. Everyone in the club was engaged.
