food crops in perilSubmitted by Quest-News-Serv... on Tue, 11/03/2009 - 06:08.
Despite the setbacks in the spring and late summer, crops were still positioned to be some of the best on record. Cotton, rice and soybeans all had excellent yield potential. As of October 13, USDA reported that 15% of the corn crop, 57% of the soybean crop, 51% of the rice crop and 98% of the cotton crop was still in the field. However, with the rainfall in September and now October, producers that are able to harvest any of the remainder of their crop will be fortunate. The remainder of the corn crop will no doubt suffer from quality issues. The soybean crop will have significant quality (up to 50% of the value) and yield losses if harvested. Rice will also suffer quality and yield losses as much of the crop is on the ground. The cotton crop will suffer yield and quality losses as well with essentially no value being obtained for the cottonseed (two bale cotton would normally have $150 per acre in cottonseed value). Typically producers prepare most of their fields for spring planting in the fall. None of that has taken place this fall which will result in added expense and possibly late planted crops in 2010. For those producers that have been and will be able to harvest some of their crops, field conditions left by wet harvesting will result in significant costs before those fields can be planted next spring.—Steve Martin, interim head of DREC (Delta Research and Extension Center) This Washington County farmer spent $130,00 on track tires two weeks ago to get his rice crop on these two combines. They are still "sitting on go". http://standeyo.com/NEWS/09_Pics_of_Day/091102.pic.of.day.html ____________________________________________ ANTI-SPECIESISM:
