Rising above Mediocrity

Yesterday, I met a young architect in the city, who is trying to determine the zeitgeist of NEO.

I am not sure that I can help him at all with his quest--but the timing of today's article in the Plain Dealer did take my breath away. 

I know some of the artists quoted in the article--not all of them very well, but I do know all by reputation.  And, in the article Julian Stanczak sums it up best:

 

After a life marked by forced displacement and separations, starting when he was taken from his Polish village at the age of 11 and imprisoned in a Soviet labor camp in Siberia, Stanczak had decided to make Cleveland his home. But he did not yet feel at home.

"I was a withdrawn and shy individual by nature," he said. "Artists are social rejects, many times, but this prize made a place -- Cleveland -- a warm home of acceptance. I was deeply touched."

 

Why stay in Cleveland? 

Because, you may get recognized, welcomed, and appreciated for your artistic contributions. 

NEO does rise above mediocrity and does achieve the elusive--ART. 

We just have to remember to SEE ART, recognize ART, welcome ART, appreciate ART, SUPPORT ART! Do not bury it.

  Kudos to the Cleveland Orchestra's grammy winner Eliesha Nelson!

(Sadly, we lost her family to another community--like many orchestra members--she does not live here because the community did not support her family)

Lev Gonick drove them away... him and Case and the sustainabillies and corrupt county government here who fund Lev and Case for BS and that wants to suck every last cent out of Cleveland by being stupid, rather than hiring Eliesha's genius husband to fix our pathetic GIS capabilities here, and move us to global leadership (as he is doing for another University and State FAR FAR FROM HERE, benefiting the plant and world)

Millions wasted to screw over some of the finest people I ever met in Cleveland. Pathetic.

  It makes me sick--we drive TALENT and BUSINESS away....and in many cases, BECAUSE of skin color...and first language spoken. 

Our Mayor actively discourages immigration to NEO--he has this insane "we'll take care of our own" first mentality. What is that about? 

How well has his own family done for us in this town? Nick Jackson at the schools?...If we do not have real leadership, soon--we WILL be Detroit.

I think we all need to find a way to live with our blended heritages.  I started to write about Tribes here and I plan to continue it. 

There's hope for Lev and hope for all of us--if we would only allow NEO to capitalize on the marriage of many tribal customs and traditions. 

We don't need to assimilate. We just need to appreciate and celebrate.  Believe it or not, as a child, I participated in a "Best things in life..." commercial :)  I am still trying to "believe."

(I am really enjoying the book, The Land, by Mildred Taylor--I think it should be required reading for everyone).

He violated me personally... a pattern out of my poor Coal Burning Neighbors Case Western Reserve University, in retaliation for shutting down their polluting little fun - you hold out hope - I have nothing more for him but a year more soot from his little plant, until I have it SHUT DOWN. Then he gets to live a better life because of me, despite himself.

Here's the immigration trend in Chicago/Cook County/Illinois - Chicago lost a few 100,000 residents last decade...

CHICAGO — Hispanics have become Illinois' largest minority group, 2010 Census data released Tuesday show, and the city of Chicago lost almost 7% of its residents over the past decade.

The state's black population has dwindled. Of the state's 12.8 million residents, 14.3% are black, down from 14.9% in 2000. Hispanics comprise 15.8% of Illinois' population. In 2000, Hispanic residents were 12.3% of the population.

Since 2000, the Hispanic population has grown by 497,316 to 2.03 million, a trend that could portend shifts in political clout. Over the same time span, the black population fell by 23,228 to 1.83 million.

I like Mexicans. Perhaps some will want to move here from Arizona... New Mexico... Illinois... our Latino population is lower than anywhere I've lived in America, and that is bad.

We definitely aren't as lame as Chicago.

So, do tea partiers hate blacks or Mexicans more... we shall see.
