CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) 19 Action News has uncovered safety concerns for kids at a local library. Neighborhood leaders are worried because of dozens of calls to police in that area.

Cleveland's South Branch Library now sits in a former nightclub, the La Copa Club near West 25th Street and Clark Avenue. 

The library was moved there on a temporary basis, but it's already been there more than a year.

Activist Henry Senyak is pushing to get the library back where it was on Scranton Road in the Tremont area. The Cleveland Public Library system moved out to decide whether or not to fix up that place.

We have reviewed police calls. In the year before the Scranton building closed, records show eight calls for that address. Since the library has been on Clark Avenue, records show more than 50 calls for that address.

"The people of Tremont overwhelmingly want their library repaired and restored and put back into the 21st century where it belongs on Scranton Road," says Senyak. 

The summary of calls doesn't show what exactly happened, or if it took place inside or outside.

But the calls show threats, theft, suspicious activity, and more.

A spokesperson says the library system is still reviewing options to fix up the old building, looking at neighborhoods, and more.  The library system can't give us a time frame for a decision on what happens next or when.

Hispanic Village

  Brian Cummins publicly stated his desire to see the historic Carnegie South Library used for historic tax credits - to help develop an insane "Hispanic Village" concept for Clark and W. 25th - also using the historic Fire House in some capacity.  This is blatant take of a public property for private investors to benefit (Councilman has been showing the library to investors).  This will be part of his "legacy" - along with NRP housing built on "contaminated" fill over an intermittent stream to the Cuyahoga River.  Very GREEN $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

Short Sale of former St. Michael School also probably figures into the master plan (subsidized Hispanic senior housing??) - http://ow.ly/wbSGI -Transaction Realty occupies the former Rysar building and their signs are popping up in Ward 14.

 

La Copa spectre on Clark - residents want library returned

I was sent a spread sheet of police calls for 2704 Clark Ave. This was sent to me be someone whom does not want to be identified.
 
It is now my understanding local politicians are trying to run interference regarding the overall safety concerns we have, . When Channel 19 did the story it was made clear they did not know how many calls were directly in the temporary library site.
 
This attached document to me is even more concerning due to it gives better details on the calls that were from the Library or from Family Dollar. I think we all can agree that it is immaterial if the call came for a complaint from within the library or the retail store. The overall area and environment is what is of concern.
 
Please review the spread sheet carefully, what is also concerning is that there was more than one instance of drugs on the premise in the library.
 
Please mark down May 21st, we need to get verification of the time and location. I am sure it will be up on Clark.

The Tremont Community, and Clark-Fulton Community overwhelming wants the Historic Carnegie South Branch remodeled, brought into the 21st century, made accessible, and reopened. Tremont West via its Board is on record saying the South Branch is a asset and should be re-opened.
 
TWDC spent $10,000.00 of its funding and dealt with three years of City red-tape to install a City Homeland Security style camera directly on the corner by the library. We did this to protect the children. This camera can be remote viewed at the command center.
 
There are three schools within 1000 foot of the old South Branch on Scranton.
 
Please take the time to review the information and links below regarding the area surrounding 2704 Clark Ave. This area is not safe, and promotes criminal activity on its own merit. The CPL staff and board should never have agreed to turn a old nightclub into a Library. Temporary or not. This nightclub was operated by its Manager Raed Sadik, three time felon, convicted of selling drugs with school yard specifications. This location a few years back was best known for thong nights and patrons getting beaten into vegetative states in the middle of the street of Clark Ave.
 
It is not safe to have school children walk around in this environment with strip clubs, with improper conduct charges, nightclubs serving minor's. If West 25th street was not best know for Adult Entertainment, Blood plamsa centers, urban stores, and a myriad of other less stellar uses it would be a different story. Lets not forget Clark Ave. was the place Ariel Castro went every day and night to purchase food and supplies, he blended  right into the background. Can we afford to have the next monster prey on Children going and coming from this library.
 
Plan on attending every meeting you can and let the Staff and board of CPL know that you want what the communities want. The Historic Carnegie South Branch repaired, upgraded, made accessible, and re-opened as soon as possible. We all voted to support the last tax levy, they have the money. This should not be a matter of cost. Its simply a matter of safety.

I, _____________________, strongly appeal to the Board and Staff of the Cleveland Public Library to without haste pass a resolution that would provide all necessary funding to repair, retrofit, upgrade, make accessible, and reopen the Carnegie South Branch Library located at 3096 Scranton Rd. 

This library branch has been a historic landmark within our community, was built with funds from the Andrew Carnegie endowment in 1911 and deserves the dignity and respect of continuing as the "People's University" serving the Tremont, Clark-Fulton, and southern Ohio City neighborhoods. 

I respectfully ask you as a resident, taxpayer, and supporter of a strong library system not to delay the decision making process any further.

Sick of the slimy underhanded council rep in this ward and his CDC with their latest W. 25th development proposal to merge South and Brooklyn branch libraries to fill a lease $$$ for the plaza he and Jeff Ramsey are proposing across from Metrohealth - if this is a false rumor - then by all means HOLD a fricken community meeting once in a while or send out a newsletter. We are also in for some stupid sandwich shop in the Mr. Jays Convenient across from the blood donation place... whatever...Brooklyn Centre Historic District, plaza and old Aldis locations look like hell. Why do we put up with these HORRIBLE representatives ?!

This past Wednesday, July 30th - attended Ward 3 meeting to get any information on what is happening with environs on near west side - to find that West 25th is slated for resurfacing from I-71 to Detroit Ave. in three weeks.  Have we received any timeline or plans for this project???? NO>
