 Dear Nathaniel,

Today is Census Day. If you haven’t already turned in your census form, please do. It’s a simple way to bring thousands of dollars to your community.

But we’re emailing you today for another reason as well — did you notice that the census uses the word “Negro” as one of the descriptions for Black people? We recently polled some ColorOfChange members to see what they thought about this. While some people find the term annoying or offensive, almost everyone agrees that it’s outdated and needs to be retired.1

If you feel the same, there are two things you can do:

Above all, please do fill out and return the census. It’s a simple way to ensure that federal dollars due your community make it there. As you may know, many of our communities leave millions of dollars on the table due to census forms not being returned.

Retire "White"

This whole census is bewildering to me-- no question about occupation, no question about place of birth--which could help future genealogists understand their family heritage.  The only data from this census will be population density, skin color and, indirectly, language.

Basically, the whole paranoia driving the census is an attempt to determine the which parts of this country will have dark skin and speak Spanish. 

I suggest that everyone answer "Other," which is how I prefer to be categorized for the purposes of this census.  For what it is worth, I sent mine in.

Time to retire white, black and assorted other.

Time for the gov one liner "how many US citizens live at this address?"

Another solution is to grant every Black person post humous immigrant status and a DNA test to determind bloodlines and re-establish links with ancestrial lands and/or peoples.

Then white folk can rest with their Euro origins and blacks with their African or other origins. When we all are rested, we can drop our hyphens and just be Americans.

How the heck can we keep saying this is a melting pot when everybody does their utmost not to. It is like we have to give up, forsake friends, family, culture and history in order to blend. Why the heck does anybody come to the US thinking they are not going to blend. On some level you will blend. That is what makes a country a country. You share common history, language, money, etc; etc; etc; and some DNA. After these many years in America, though you all hate to admitt it, you are natives!!!

The history of abusing each other based on skin color and ancestry must come to an end. This would prove America is great, not bombs and technology.
