Why purple at Easter?

Self imposed preamble:  these proof  images of Swiss chard are important to recognize because they have leaf circulation patterns which mirror blood vessels and watersheds, and stalks with vibrant red, yellow and purple colors - but they are mere vegetables. 

Why do churches adopt purple for Easter?

Purple

Purple is historically the color of royalty.  It was the hardest pigment to obtain and also the most expensive.  Therefore it was worn by the elite.  The Church calls Christ the "King of Kings"  so it would be natural for them to use purple as a representive color for Jesus.  I gave up being a Catholic for lent though.
