Is Faith an Ally or Enemy
to Democracy?

CSU’s Dr. David
Forte speaks to youth at The City Club of
Cleveland

CLEVELAND, OH—Dr. David F. Forte, professor of law at
Cleveland State University’s Cleveland Marshall College of
Law, will explore the relationship of faith and democracy at
noon on Monday, April 25,
2005
, at The City Club of
Cleveland Youth Forum.

In
Iraq, suicide bombers murder innocent
civilians in the name of Allah. Religious leaders in
Saudi
Arabia
preach hatred. And yet, faith was a
primary source of the liberties Americans now enjoy. And it was the religious
faith of Pope John Paul II that had much to do with the destruction of one of
the worst tyrannies in history—the former
Soviet Union. Can democracy take root and
prosper without the support of religion?

Dr. Forte is continuously working to
improve the standards of human rights worldwide. He is often called upon to
testify before the United States Congress and has consulted with the Department
of State on human rights and international affairs issues. A frequent lecturer,
Forte speaks on national and international radio and television programs, and
his public service has been recognized by many, including the Cleveland Bar
Association and the late Pope John Paul II. In addition to being chairman of the
Cleveland Bar Association’s Professional Ethics Committee, Dr. Forte is author
of several briefs before the U.S. Supreme Court and chief counsel to the
United
States
delegation to the United Nations.

The program is not open to the
general public, but media is welcome to cover the Forum.

This forum is the fifth and final in
the 2004-2005 Youth Forum series at The City Club. It is made possible through
the generous support of the Bruening Foundation, the Martha Holden Jennings
Foundation, the Thomas White Foundation, and the Stocker Foundation.

The City Club
Youth Forum Council’s purpose is to provide a leadership opportunity for high
schools students to discuss and analyze local, national and international issues
that they select after considerable research and debate. Council members learn
to organize and implement five forums for more than 1,000 high school students
from public, private and parochial schools in Cuyahoga and
Lorain Counties and the City of
Cleveland.

Established in 1912 to encourage new
ideas and a free exchange of thought, The City Club of Cleveland is the oldest
continuous free speech forum in the country, renowned for its tradition of
debate and discussion. The City Club’s mission is to inform, educate and inspire
citizens by presenting significant ideas and providing opportunities for
dialogue in a collegial setting.
