Facing History and Ourselves
I like that tagline. Should we ignore injustice with our silence? How do we participate and make a difference? I plan on being there (partly just to see the renovated John Hay School--the adjacent Cleveland School of the Arts is slated to be demolished....).
Talking...
...is one response to injustice.
Hitting is another.
So is yelling.
So is leaving.
Silence is another.
Is any inherently more or less effective?

Guy!
Glad you have room to move between black holes here. Hope it is a bright spot in the night!
Jeff is indeed a great buddy and a great body (as in person and otherwise). I agree that sometimes silence is quite effective, but please don't stop calling me Genius!
Seems smart people in NEO choose leaving
and then stay far away... and who may blame them...
So the Cleveland Foundation will use a headhunting firm to find people outside Cleveland who like corruption... I suppose there are plenty of fired, unskilled Bank CEOs and investment bankers who will gladly kiss any rich ass.... even of failures in Cleveland.

Demolish School of the Arts?!?!
Let's see... the Clinic needs a new animal torture facility and that is the only land they can find... or perhaps Sanders' staff have concrete bribes to reward for friends of the School Board..
Where is this on any master plans, and whose?

and replaced with a new building
The folks who will make this a reality: CSA Friends Board
"Friends of the Cleveland School of the Arts, a nonprofit group of concerned parents and citizens, announced recently its plans to raise nearly $30 million for a new school."
It's been on the boards for some time. There goes another great Cleveland building. No plans that I have seen, so far they have power, some money and a blank. This is supposed to be part of CMSD's Segment 5. Does anyone know how this is going?
Why they can't renovate and restore is beyond me, but these are folks with whom I don't want to tangle. They will invariably build it green, just like our county commissioners planned to do at the corner of East 9th and Euclid with Breuer. green schools for Ohio
I'll tangle.. some of these people have potential
I know kids at the CSA and will see what they know about any plans for their school, and the value of community support and friends to date.
I suggest any admirable people associated with CSA, who are true friends of the arts, rescue this institution from the Foundations and poor command and control leadership here... same advice goes out to the Cleveland Institute of Art... there are too many conflicts of interest behind the leadership of Their Friends and demolition plans should not receive any public funds or support until those are cleared up, and plans are made public and supported by us.
And what was the point of the PD story in 2007, and who planted it in the PD and why?
Start with OneCommunity and Forest City at the top.
This is industrial planning at its worst... I can't wait to see their "plan" to see how it fits with the SII plans, and Connecting Cleveland.
Who would be able to tell us if there are any documents about this since the article in the PD in 2007 - if the Friends are working on this at all there should be a record.

Cesar Chavez
I recently saw the movie MILK, which is also a must-see. How does one person mobilize enough people to make effective change? Cesar Chavez was able to do it and he lived to see his message carried on.
I am glad that CWRU is sponsoring this event. I hope to see a lot of young faces there. We need young energy in this town.
Mi Pueblo
I be attending this tomorrow...perhaps, REALNEOphytes and REALNEOphiles can meet-up afterwards at Mi Pueblo? Margaritas :)
Mexico vs. USA
After tonight's presentation by Julie Chavez Rodriguez, we adjourned to Mi Pueblo where Mexico challenged the USA at soccer. Unbelieveably, the USA was up by two, before access to the game mysteriously disappeared. See what you missed?!!
Also slated for DEMOLITION
Benjamin Franklin School
John Marshall
Charles Mooney....any one else care to chime in?
Here's a thought--why not pay teachers to help spruce up their schools this summer? Paint classrooms...hire some with light rehab experience to repair ceilings...or better yet, give some of the kids, hands on training....demolishing the School of the Arts is just an excuse to give some mediocre architecture firms and contractors business in this town.
Corruption and demolishing historic landmarks
The Cleveland Foundation and their friends hired Sanders (for how much a year) so they need to go down with his ship, and give him use of all their resources, like the planning commission and historic landmarks folks in town... all the Foundation demands in return is Sanders route all school money to Foundation friends and family, just like with everything else here.
Another $ billion to add to the list...

Max Hayes will provide great lake views
for condo developers when it comes down to be replaced (maybe moved). Is this in the expansion plans for the Detroit Shoreway SII?
Location, Location, Location
Max Hayes is a great site and neighborhood. I haven't heard about it being demolished and sold... Mary Beth should know about that...
Being the most valuable school site, in many respects, it must be watched very closely... clearly Cleveland Public Schools are not being imporved by the Master Planning for the region, so expect the worst for our public education system, and the best for those who ruin it.

Max Hayes will be rebuilt
Around West 65th/Walworth Run somewhere...Old Max Hayes will be a "swing site" for housing students whose schools are being rebuilt. They are making this up as they go along.
We need to show outrage for all of the District's building plans to demolish and rebuild.
paul dunbar elementary
paul dunbar elementary is on the demo slate. its this cool 60s building with a circular design. their reason for demo and not rehab, as i understand it (from cmsd official last may) is that it has no handicap access to 2nd floor...
¿Cómo se dice...?
100 people RSVP'd, but only about 40-50 people showed up tonight to hear Julie Chavez Rodriguez speak tonight at John Hays High School. I was heartened to see that the audience was mostly made up of folks under 25 and predominantly African-American, but still it had to hurt. The audience maybe included 4-5 Latinos. One young lady spoke up after Julie Chavez Rodriguez's speech, but there needs to be more of a groundswell from the Latin/Spanish-speaking community in the United States. Not a lot of folks know that Cesar Chavez coined the phrase "Si se puede," now the anthem of the Obama generation. Yes we can, is more like..yes, it can happen, but not unless we try harder to engage and collectively realize social justice.
