Owner of Hilliard Square Theater looking to sell historic Lakewood building so it can be restored

Where's Ray Shepardson? It's time to restage Jacques Brel! Or maybe some depression era plays.

“I don’t agree with Schwarz that protest is futile. I think that every voice that is raised has its effect. My opinion is that if you have convictions, you shouldn’t be afraid to express them” (Elmer Price, We, the People: A Play in Twenty Scenes [New York: Coward-McCann, 1933], 138).

Art of the deal

Submitted by lmcshane on Thu, 04/02/2009 - 07:05.

Yesterday's daily ethical transgression--Lottery Director Dolan's distribution of tickets to a state trooper--was discussed and my sister, the artist, referred me to the work of Mark Lombardi.

It's how conflict of interest makes for slippery slopes.  I hope that I don't offend any of the wrong people by mentioning the reference.

The Waterloo Cafe

Submitted by frankyz669 on Wed, 04/01/2009 - 11:17.

I would like to post what I hope to be an item of interest to everybody here.

I plan on creating an amenity that the Collinwood neighborhood (and Cleveland) needs.

I am opening a cafe - it will be called the Waterloo Cafe.

It will feature a menu that emphasizes local agriculture.  The cafe will be a combination coffeehouse, cafe, and bar/nightclub in the burgeoning Waterloo Entertainment District.

Two Free Opera Tickets: La Sonnambula at Severance Town Center April 1, 7 PM, one condition...

Submitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Tue, 03/31/2009 - 10:26.

There is plenty of opera in Cleveland, though not all of it is live. Now technology allows us see and hear MET performances, almost as if we were there. Severance Town Center is no Lincoln Center, but the tickets are a lot cheaper.

I would like to give someone in NEO Two Free Tickets to a Metropolitan Opera performance of La Sonnabula (The sleepwalker) music by Vicenzo Bellini, Italian libretto by Felice Romani.

The Cleveland International Film Festival Sunday, March 29: A Grand Finale!

Submitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Sun, 03/29/2009 - 23:28.

When I arrived at the Cleveland International Film Festival Sunday afternoon for the 2:15 PM showing of THE TOUR, directed by Goran Markovic, Tower City Cinemas was packed! I quickly took a place in the long line for my film. I later learned that yesterday's attendance broke all previous records; 9,500 had attended. With many of Sunday's films on standby by the early afternoon, the last day of the festival promised to be a record breaker too. The gentleman who introduce THE TOUR also told us that the fund raising goal of $33,000 had been surpassed. By Saturday evening $45,000 had been donated. CIFF staff were optimistic that the total would exceed $50,000 by the end of the festival.

Happy thoughts on a blue Sunday

Submitted by lmcshane on Sun, 03/22/2009 - 11:52.

Coloring my world. I am thinking about the recommendation of neighbor Anthony Green to find the jazz in Cleveland.  He steers me to Jazz28, which, lo and behold, can be found on Cleveland's west side.

I am going to make a bike trek there soon, and in the meantime, the Cleveland Jazz Project motivates me to clean my house on a blue Sunday.

CLEVELAND INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL: FILM REVIEWS, DAY ONE

Submitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Fri, 03/20/2009 - 23:44.

My first pick, at 11:45 am, was Dancers, by the Danish director Pernille Fischer Christensen.

Her second feature length film, it is part of the CIFF series titled  “Scandinavian Screenings.”

Dancers plays again Sunday March 22 at 9:20 pm. I highly recommend this film!
