Nelson Goodman, one of the 20th century's foremost philosophers, believed in the cognitive nature of art and viewed the arts as partners with the sciences. Pictures, the performing arts, and architecture shape our understanding just as mathematics and the sciences do. In his lecture, Ivan Gaskell will provide insights on Nelson's question, "When is art?"

Orchid Mania returned to the Cleveland Botanical Gardens this past weekend. This years theme is blossoms and butterflies. Hundreds of blooming orchids are everywhere. Artificial butterflies made of feathers and artistic renderings of butterflies represent the lepidoteran half of the theme. There are also some live butterflies in the glass house, however they were asleep during the preview party Friday evening.

History of Sleep Research Lecture Drew a Diverse Crowd to CIA

Submitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Thu, 02/23/2006 - 16:45.
Although Dr. William C. Dement stated that his lecture was not about the role of dreams in creativity and art, the painting The Nightmare, by Fuseli usually comes to mind when I think of dreams. I am an art historian, but I think many people associate dreams with artistic inspiration.

Heads up - A.J. Rocco's is serving up a huge portion of unplugged Reggae around 9 PM tonight only - Carlos Jones!! FREE!

From the Carlos Jones website at http://www.carlosjones.com/:

"Carlos Jones is to Cleveland reggae what Jim Brown is to Cleveland running backs: the undisputed champ. With Jones at the forefront of the scene for more than 25 years -- first in I-Tal, then in First Light -- this city's reggae following was practically built upon his back. Devoutly spiritual, Jones is a Bob Marley devotee who eschews dancehall for galvanized roots-reggae. Jones and his PLUS Band were voted Best Live Act at the 2004 Scene Music Awards and Best Reggae / World Act for 2005, and they maintain a hectic pace of gigging, playing out every single weekend. As a result, the band's soulful riddims have made it one of Cleveland's top draws for close to a decade." Cleveland Scene Magazine August 3, 2005

Bridget Ginley to Curate New Slavic Village Art Space

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Wed, 02/01/2006 - 17:10.

I just saw posted on Bridget Ginley's blog, http://erieeffusion.blogspot.com/ ...she's curating a new art space in Slavic Village. The opening is tonight, if you see this last minute - see more info below, from another interesting NEO blog, http://wildplum.blogspot.com/... I couldn't say it better myself!

Art goddess suprema of the universe Bridget Ginley stole our hearts long ago with her master works, fantastic events at Buzz Gallery and the first-rate wit she displays on her blog. Additional air kisses and puppy dog eyes are extended to her for her latest endeavor, Art in the Village @ 5700.
