Making ChangeCLEVELAND, DOWN BUT NOT OUT – MAYBE THAT’S BAD…Submitted by Jeff Buster on Wed, 08/29/2007 - 13:36.
I consistently attempt to have a “positive” outlook about North East Ohio and Cleveland. I consider the substance of my posts on Realneo and affirmatively select material which I believe is conducive to improving the region. However, there can be a problem with this self steered Polly Anna editorial policy . Always looking at the bright side might be just perpetuating a lie – maybe always having a positive outlook is actually misleading people and leading others into the false belief that the region is doing ok, that the region is improving. Maybe it would be more helpful if I used my blog to accelerate failure – get to the bottom of it, get it over with and start new…

Cyclist-Motorist Accident Injures Cyclist Representative Michael SkindellSubmitted by Kevin Cronin on Thu, 08/16/2007 - 12:44.
I share everybody's horror about the accident and injuries to State Rep. Michael Skindell and am very glad to hear he's in the hospital and receiving appropriate care. From the description, the motorist is clearly at fault for cutting off the cyclist to make a left turn. It's certainly fortunate that the cyclist's helmet helped, but it's far better to stay out of accidents in the first place. This also presents an opportunity for public education, reminding motorists about cyclists' right to the road. Share the Road, It's the Law.

Ubuntu 7.04 fully certified, pre-installed and supported on a range of Dell productsSubmitted by Norm Roulet on Sun, 08/12/2007 - 21:36.
I was up at the Ubuntu website downloading the latest version to my ThinkPad (from a mirror site at OSUOSL, which I hopefully thought would be Ohio State University Open Source Lab, but was of course Oregon State) and I noticed a promo that "Ubuntu on Dell now available in the UK, Germany and France" with support from Canonical... one promo said this is available in the USA as well. This is a major development for Linux and for Ubuntu, and for open source development in the world. For the first time ever, I am a Dell fan... I'll be interested how pricing will differ between comparable Dell Ubuntu and Windows boxes... especially after you add Office (v.s. free OpenOffice)... more below and here.

Located by the Case residential village, across from the Starbucks, at the intersection of East 115th, Juniper and Bellflower, this work is a great addition to an important art collection, curated by Evelyn Kiefer, that makes University Circle a much more inspiring and remarkable place, with public art. thanks to RoldoSubmitted by Susan Miller on Wed, 08/08/2007 - 09:00.
Thank god we have Roldo Bartimole in our region writing about the inequity and the corruption here. If not for Roldo, we might never know such tantalizing tidbits as we learn here in his CoolCleveland article this week: Should Hagan Have Recused Himself from Vote? (I link it here because I know that unlike the PD articles that disappear after a couple of weeks, this CC article will remain online in perpetuity.) For example, did you know, we pay sales taxes on the sin taxes? " Many don’t know this but the county sales tax is charged on the “sin” taxes, adding another $16 million to the $238 million." When does that tax end?I hope someone in Columbus or in the federal government is reading this -- oh, yeah, we have a corrupt judicial system, too. Oh and there's this, "Among the gift-givers was Robert DiGeronimo of Independence Excavating. Precision Environmental Co., which won a contract last week to demolish the Breuer Building with a bid $915,000 above the low bid, is part of the DiGeronimo/Independence Excavating Co. family." Does that mean that Madden's "eye on Carbone" saw that he may indeed be convicted in the Lorain trial and decided to let him go from the job? According to the docket in Lorain County Court, Carbone has relinquished his right to a speedy trial since one of his attorneys is in a federal murder trial, so the new court date is set for 8/20/07. Government in Cleveland and Cuyahoga County is indeed a sucking swirling eddy of despair, corruption and backdoor dealing. Should Hagan have recused himself? Absolutely! Does he have an ethical bone in his body? Apparently not. Will voters stand by and let this continue? Hopefully not. Here's another example of Hagan's doublespeak: "

Is Medical Mart Merging With the Urban Design District Concept?Submitted by Kevin Cronin on Mon, 08/06/2007 - 20:18.
I grew up and lived in Cleveland and, other than school, stayed here until I moved away for about ten years. Since coming back home, one distressing thing I've noted is that decision-makers, at all levels, closely guard information, almost as if a Captain who would rather go down with the ship, than loosen up and perhaps not go down at all. The Medical Mart non-debate has all those strange dynamics. Is it possible, I wonder, if a true, public-private partnership on a Medical Mart/Convention Center/Urban Design District might actually make sense after all?
My Ideal Presidential CandidateSubmitted by Kevin Cronin on Sun, 08/05/2007 - 08:14.
Who's my candidate, the pollster asks? I will pledge to support what ever candidate does more to make the world hate America less. At the outset, I want to say how truly appalled I am at myself for having such an abysmal standard for evaluating candidates. How can I tolerate, much less espouse, such a bleak, cynical prism to separate the candidates? Yet, I am more troubled by America and an America political system that is content to operate in denial.
Film and TV Production Incentives - A Real Example From Today's Plain DealerSubmitted by Kevin Cronin on Fri, 08/03/2007 - 15:27.
Once again, Cleveland's daily is excited about the latest “drive-by shooting” of the film industry, reporting that 'visitors to the Rock Hall got an extra treat — watching Rainn Wilson, chief geek from “The Office,” shoot scenes for his upcoming movie “The Rocker.” Once again, however, we are missing the big picture ... literally. While one day's shooting in Cleveland warrants the media attention, the “The Rocker” will be shooting forty-five days in Toronto, Ontario.

Here's the photo of the Breuer Building which respectfully reflects the Breuer neighboring buildings. Where has the Cleveland Foundation been during the discussion of the removal of the Marcel Breuer Building out of downtown Cleveland, Ohio? The CF hasn't been shy about lobbying for wind energy, for which the Foundation is to be applauded. And the wind energy issue certainly has a political side – the other side from the republican oil and gas industry. Why doesn't the CF jump in on this historic preservation issue?
REALNEO, Claes and Evelyn, make Cleveland Magazine this month, at Gallery U-HaulSubmitted by Norm Roulet on Wed, 07/04/2007 - 13:45.
I've appreciated having Cleveland Magazine pick up some of my photos from REALNEO for publication in their print edition - last time featuring the Van Duzer show at Convivium and this month featuring Gallery U-Haul, and my wife Evelyn and son Claes, at the April 11, 2007 Tremont Art Walk... I look forward to seeing you at Patsy Kline's homeless gallery at the July 13 Tremont Art Walk, where she will hold a Gas Money Garage Sale.

preservationSubmitted by Susan Miller on Sat, 06/16/2007 - 14:54.
Why are we so behind in Northeast Ohio when it comes to preservation? Two articles converged onto my conciousness this week in the midst of an attempt to save the Breuer from destruction. Brooklyn Waterfront Called Endangered Sitehere's a quote: “The buildings really represent an important part of Brooklyn’s heritage, and it would be a tragedy to lose it,” Richard Moe, president of the trust, said in an interview. “We’re very concerned that there’s such a rush on to demolish everything.” and Great Architecture Finds a Home in Indianahere's a quote: "Columbus (Indiana) is a small town (population 39,000) that just happens to have the most incredible collection of modern architecture in the Midwest (outside Chicago, of course). Everyone from Eliel Saarinen and his son, Eero, to Deborah Berke and Richard Meier has worked there, designing so many schools, churches and libraries that, at least in theory, you can’t walk a single block without stumbling on an elegant glass-and-concrete building or a house of worship soaring like a Euclidean fantasy. “You actually have to see it to believe it,” wrote Christopher Porter, a reader."
Grand Opening of Level Three GallerySubmitted by Norm Roulet on Wed, 05/30/2007 - 22:43.
06/01/2007 - 18:00 06/01/2007 - 22:00 Etc/GMT-4 It is great to see more progress in the growth of the art scene in the mid-town and St. Clair arts district area, with the opening of Level Three Gallery this weekend... another sign of vibrant life. I like the work of the artists I know from this group so am glad to see them situated again - some showed together at Buzz, on W. 25th, which I liked very much. I look forward to seeing this new space and their new work. So, this Friday, June 1, art and culture lovers should start with a tour through the Hough bakeries, at the Inner Circle, for Happy Hour, then head over to CIA for their opening of Design Values 2, and then to Level Three for their opening, described below. By the end of the evening, you will not have driven far, will have done lots of great, authentic Cleveland things, and had plenty of opportunites for good company, art, food and cheer. Location
