ClevelandQuality Furniture (now closed) on Woodland near E55th in Cleveland OhioSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Tue, 03/11/2008 - 19:42.
This very unique and original hand painted sign is a thing of the past. Today we use digitally generated bill boards and digitally printed screens - of the LeBron James "I was a witness" type on Terminal Tower. ( categories: )

PAY IT FORWARD - THEN THROW IT AWAY - CUYAHOGA WASTE SPECIALTYSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Tue, 03/11/2008 - 19:14.
On April 3, 2007 there was a discussion about the proposal for a new Cuyahoga County Administration building here on Realneo. Around that time I had read a letter written by Tim Ferris which suggested that the present County Administration building was originally built to be expanded upward. Today I add the photo above to confirm that the building was intended to be continued upward – you can see the columns projecting right up through the roof on both the main Administration Building and the Annex building. I’ll bet if you removed the copper flashing from the top of the columns, there would be a plate with bolt holes already in it, ready to accept the steel columns for floors 5, 6, 7, etc.

An Invitation: The Intergenerational School… Is Re‐inventing Public Education ‐ here in Cleveland!Submitted by Norm Roulet on Mon, 03/10/2008 - 23:12.
03/13/2008 - 17:30 03/13/2008 - 19:30 Etc/GMT-5 The Intergenerational School is holding a Wine & Cheese Open House (with Student‐Led Tours!), this Thursday, March 13, 2008 - 5:30 pm until 7:00 pm - and I strongly encourage those interested in innovation in education and aging to attend. Read through the whole invitation to learn more about the school - it is astounding, as are the founders... Cathy and Peter Whitehouse. This is the school that I hope to expand in the former Hough Bakeries complex, as the anchor for redevelopment of the surrounding neighborhood, so if you are interested in that project then you are interested in TIS.... I hope to see you there Thursday... be sure to RSVP! Location

Woe is me. The sad state of communication leads to a state of confusion in Northeast Ohio at every level. Street, block, neighborhood, county, state, ad infinitum... Will anyone ever figure out the new media? Please. Today, as Councilman Cummins knows...I fielded questions about snow bans, plowing, school closings, and sidewalks. Kids did not get picked up by school buses, because the streets were impassable. I will be emailing my own suggestions, but can we start with the ability for your office to post critical alerts on the City of Cleveland web site?
A great city is not merely a collection of buildings. It is a place of connections.* At its simplest, a connection can be a bike path that connects a neighborhood to the waterfront or a bus line that connects people to jobs. At its most fundamental, a connection can be a shared space - an urban plaza, a neighborhood park, a community institution or even a coffee shop - that connects people to one another in a way that creates a sense of "place" and a sense of belonging - that elusive but enduring thing that we call a "community."
REALNEO Regionalism Proposal #1: Merge Cleveland, UCI, Case, UH, and Clinic Police DepartmentsSubmitted by Norm Roulet on Sat, 03/08/2008 - 00:08.
In living and working around University Circle, it occurs to me how stupid it is that there are literally five or six police forces operating within overlapping turfs... Cleveland, University Circle, Case, University Hospitals, and the Clinic each have significant police forces. In addition, Cuyahoga County has patrols in the area... all intersecting within a mile of each other... and you are probably as likely to get shot within a mile of that intersection as anywhere in America.

Keeping up with the Joneses, rather than Tubbs-JonesSubmitted by Norm Roulet on Tue, 03/04/2008 - 02:41.
When I asked one of the Obama volunteers at my ward campaign headquarters how she thought Obama would do in our poor, urban, distressed part of town, she said she was the first African American to move to East Cleveland, and she knows everyone there, and they will all vote for Obama... and then I realized it was Mrs. Jones.
History being written right, today... Tech Czar on Medical MartSubmitted by Norm Roulet on Fri, 02/29/2008 - 17:30.
I spotted a link on BFD to Tech Czar Michael DeAloia's fascinating write up on the Medical Mart, so much in our pocketbooks and news every day, in real neo. Well, it seems we have one community leader interested to set the records straight today and from now on, in his world, on his blog, about his world, which is fascinating. I'm glad to see Michael more active than ever, leading the community, since leaving City Hall, and I appreciate the honest facts about the Medical Mart that are missing everywhere else. Read this tidbit below and you'll link through for the rest...

Rare Film of 1908 Collinwood School FireSubmitted by CPL Fine Arts on Thu, 02/28/2008 - 11:11.
The worst school fire in U.S. history occurred on March 4, 1908, when Collinwood’s Lake View School was destroyed in an uncontrollable inferno. Known as the Collinwood School Fire, this disaster shocked the world with its death toll of 172 children and three adults. In preparing an exhibit to commemorate the centennial of the disaster, Cleveland Public Library uncovered a rare silent film of the fire scene and public funeral. These short films are being shown here for the first time in a century. Also included is a short film of the Cleveland Fire Department displaying its equipment in 1900. Cleveland Fire Department provided back-up assistance to the Collinwood Fire Department at the time of the fire and would have used equipment similar to what is seen in this film. PETER GRIESINGER WRITES CLEVELAND COUNCIL RE: AMP COAL PLANSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Mon, 02/25/2008 - 14:30.
Dear Cleveland City Council Members:
This is an urgent plea to exercise your right to cancel the 50 YEAR obligation by Cleveland Public Power to purchase 100MW of electricity from American Municipal Power’s proposed $3.4 billion power plant in Meigs County, OH.
The AMP Contract is The Wrong Deal for ClevelandSubmitted by Kevin Cronin on Sun, 02/24/2008 - 20:07.
Cleveland City Council should rescind its involvement in AMP-Ohio's proposed coal-fired utility in southern Ohio. A fifty year commitment to coal is the wrong direction, for Cleveland Public Power (CPP), its customers and the environment. Instead, CPP should develop a comprehensive plan for energy need and energy sources, that includes efforts to reduce demand through conservation, insulation, wind, solar and other alternative sources.
AMP OHIO NEGOTIATES IN BAD FAITH WITH CLEVELANDSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Sat, 02/23/2008 - 16:24.
Committing to American Municipal Power's proposed Meigs County pulverized coal generator for 50 years is a death trap for the City of Cleveland - and AMP knows it. Attending the Cleveland City Council subcommittee on CPP all day yesterday brought things to my mind that wouldn’t have aligned in my head if I hadn’t sat and listened to the back and forth for hours. AMP OHIO is negotiating with Cleveland in BAD FAITH.
