A New Convention Center: Civic Hope or Civic Hype?

Spurred in part by the NAE Conference scheduled for June 2, REI's New Energy Roundtable and TransTech
have organized local energy fest to discuss sustainable mobility. A
number of interesting endeavors are taking off in Ohio - including the
design of a really efficient hybrid auto - and this is a chance to
discuss some of them with people directly involved.

A lot of conversation has come from a few of us that attended the REI Regional Meeting: University Collaborative on sustainability. What were your opinions and what do you feel next steps should be?

& University Collaborative forum on “Moving Forward: Creating a Sustainable
Northeast Ohio� brought together at the Cleveland Ritz-Carlton Hotel a diverse
group of probably 100 representatives of businesses, non-profits, academe and government
to discuss the economic opportunity of sustainable development – to restore NEO
as a “green city by a blue lake�.

About the NEO Excellence Roundtable: an ad hoc group of people who care about Northeast Ohio are collaborating to make
NEO the world leader in social computing and openly
strategizing on how NEO as a region may achieve world-class status -
we are establishing benchmarks for success and taking action in pursuit
of measurable outcomes. Current pursuits include bridging the
digital divide in East Cleveland, deploying the optimal social
network for Northeast Ohio, and expanding understanding of the issues surrounding Whiskey Island.

On March 31, 2005, the Greater Cleveland Lead Advisory Council (GCLAC) announced a significant initiative to eradicate lead poisoning in Greater Cleveland by 2010. On April 26th the GCLAC formally launched the initiative with a meeting of the membership held at Burke Lakefront Airport.

Designing an open network to facilitate sustainability

This workshop will explore how an open network can provide a
strong identity and support collaborative action for sustainability in
Northeast Ohio. What would the network look like? What would it do?
What services would be needed to make everyone more effective?
Help design the action plan!

Entrepreneurs for Sustainability (E4S) has
been collecting information about its members and who is in their
networks. At the April 19 E4S meeting, social networking expert Valdis
Krebs will unveil what this network looks like. And EcoCity Cleveland's
David Beach will discuss the potential for a GreenCityBlueLake Network
- a new network identity to provide context for sustainability in
Northeast Ohio.

The growing visibility of sustainable development
creates new opportuinities for NEO. We have a strong foundation of
organizations committed to sustainability. We have a thick network of
committed civic entrepreneurs who know a lot about these issues. We can
move forward with an aggressive sustainable development agenda in NEO.

Last week, the UN issued an important report on the future of our environment. The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment is focused on improving our insights into the environmental consequences of development.

Northern California has a unique combination of incredible brain power, the world's highest quality, connected places, and innovation networks - and its booming'. It rode through the bubble-burst with little disruption and now ideas, deals and dollars are flowing freely. The sun is shining, the skies are blue and the limits. While this place and reality are far removed from NEO, there are connections to make and lessons to learn - there is knowledge to tranfer. Details to post here.

Joe Stanley a 5th year interior design major at the Cleveland Institute of Art gave a presentation on his senior project to an enthusiastic crowd at the Peter B. Lewis building at 2 p.m. today as part of REALNEO. Joe's senior project is an ambitious vision for CIA, University and the City of Cleveland. It was exhibited at 1300 Gallery this past fall along with the work of several of his classmates. Joe's project and those of his classmates were destined to be forgotten after the exhibition (which only lasted one night), but Joe's project has been given new life through REALNEO. Joe has his own COIL at REALNEO called neomainstreet. neomainstreet contains images of Joe's models and drawings, a discussion of his design philosophy and its context within contemporary and historical trends in architecture and civic planning. Its a fascinating site of local, national and international interest!

Director Bruce Latimer's talk on sustainability of sustainability with sobering
insight from a biologist on evolution of man, that we are on a run away train
headed toward the abyss, that termites are more important to the Earth than
humans, that we are all Africans, that man is hard wired to compete, and that
odds are 60/40% against the survival of humanity. He is not hopeful mankind -
man unkind - will survive more than the next few generations. He sees the only
hope of human survival is that we hijack our hard wiring to compete with
economic reward for doing the right things - getting together like we are today
and talk about the problems and find the right solutions - and we must do that
at a global level. China will not decide they want less than Americans and we
already need 4 planets Earth to support what we already consume.
