A New Convention Center: Civic Hope or Civic Hype?
Anthony
Coyne, Chair of Cleveland Planning Commission, and Heywood Sanders,
Public Administration Professor, University of Texas
Has
videoconferencing spelled the end of the merry convention carousing of
yesteryear, or is it simply a matter of costs outweighing benefits?
Pro-convention center advocate Anthony Coyne, respected urban real
estate attorney and chair of the Cleveland Planning Commission, and
University of Texas professor Heywood Sanders, an outspoken opponent of
publicly funded convention centers, will debated the impact of tourism
on a struggling economy such as Cleveland’s and whether the expense of
this new development is worth the costs involved.
Anthony Coyne, vice president and shareholder with Mansour, Gavin,
Gerlack & Manos Co., is an expert in urban affairs. The author of
several papers, he is a frequent guest lecturer at Cleveland State
University. Heywood Sanders is author of "Space Available: The
Realities of Convention Centers as Economic Development Strategy," a
study by the Brookings Institution on the economic viability of
multi-million dollar convention facilities.
Moderating the discussion is Ed Morrison, executive director of the
Regional Economic Issues Center at Case Western Reserve University.
