Canada sees staggering mildness as planet’s high-pressure record is “obliterated”.... baby, it ain't cold outside!Submitted by Norm Roulet on Sun, 01/23/2011 - 13:59.
Joe Romm reports extremely bad climate news on Climate Progress. Sit down, take a breath (drink... hit...), and read on.... baby, it ain't cold outside! Canada sees staggering mildness as planet’s high-pressure record is “obliterated” - Climate Progress - January 23, 2011
The disinformers and many in the media love to focus on where it is cold in the winter. It has been cool where many people live. Brr! Unfortunately for homo sapiens, it’s been staggeringly warm where the ice is. I’ll do a post on Greenland shortly, but the NSF-sponsored researchers at UCAR/NCAR have posted some staggering data on just how warm it has been in northern Canada:
Previously I wrote about how Weather Channel expert Stu Ostro discussed Georgia’s record-smashing global-warming-type deluge: “Nevertheless, there’s a straightforward connection in the way the changing climate “set the table” for what happened this September in Atlanta and elsewhere. It behooves us to understand not only theoretical expected increases in heavy precipitation (via relatively slow/linear changes in temperatures, evaporation, and atmospheric moisture) but also how changing circulation patterns are already squeezing out that moisture in extreme doses and affecting weather in other ways.” In January, Ostro explained at great length in a long PPT, “A connection between global warming and synoptic meteorology,” which is a must-read for wonks. In December, Stu Ostro explained:
The UCAR/NCAR analysis continues:
Large areas of open water persisted across much of the area between Greenland and Canada on 21 December 2010. (Image courtesy Cryosphere Today.)
Why so freakishly mild? One factor that both feeds and is fed by the warmth is the highly unusual amount of open water across seas that are normally frozen by late November. On the winter solstice (December 21), Hudson Bay was little more than half frozen (see map at right). Similarly, a large swath of the Baffin/Newfoundland Sea fell weeks behind schedule in freezing up. As evident in the charts at bottom, these bodies of water remain in catch-up mode. Around the south part of Baffin Island, “the boats were still in the water during the first week of January,” says David Phillips, a senior climatologist with Environment Canada. “The Meteorological Service of Canada was still writing marine forecasts as of 7 January, well beyond anything we have ever done.” Storm after storm sweeping up the East Coast in recent weeks has pumped warm Atlantic air across eastern Canada, helping postpone the freeze-up even further and allowing temperatures over land to soar far above average. According to Philips, the implications for people in the far north have been widespread. Nunavut’s capital, Iqaluit, had to cancel its year-end snowmobile run on Frobisher Bay for the first time. “Last New Year’s Eve, the big story was ice breaking up,” says Phillips. “This year there was no ice to break up.” Worst of all, he adds, “it’s impossible for many people in parts of the eastern Arctic to safely get on the ice to hunt much-needed food for their families—for the second winter in a row. Never before have we seen weather impact a way of life in so many small and big ways.” Now imagine how warm it is going to be in the Arctic when during these kinds of heat waves are compounded by several decades of global warming:
How could the Greenland ice sheet possibly survive?

O'Brien's "Forget Global Warming" made more sense in Canadian
Time to check in on O'Brien's "Forget Global Warming" made more sense in Canadian - wonder if any of these smart guys still think what they thought in 2008 - and wonder if any of them are smart enough to disclose the truth now?!?! Like who they are really working for...?!?! O'Brien?!?!
O'Brien rewrites Gunter's column poorly, layering in some political barf about "Brother Al Gore & His Oscar-Winning Nobel-Laureate Traveling Climate Show and Relevancy Revival", but O'Brien covers the same misinformational territory as Gunter, at times near verbatim, concluding...
Read through each of these entire columns and post your thoughts on this. To me, O'Brien copied the Gunter article without attribution, and made a real mess of it in the process.

Tuvalu will be underwater in 15 years... That is very real to me
I found an interesting group of observations about Global Warming on Matavuvalle - a very cool active social network in Fiji...
The Pacific Ocean rises... more tsunamis... and much of Fiji is gone.
Going... Going...
We may watch them drown... perhaps even see people drown on webcam... on Matavuvalle... or we may get serious about climate change at the global level...
Presidents, Prime Minister and governments look to this issue for preferance come election time. And more serious issues of climate change happening with natural disasters claiming headlines all over the world.
Tuvalu will be underwater in 15 years.....That is very real to me.
helen thanks for bringing up this topic.....i was just gonna post something of the same but glad u beat me to it ;o)
global warming is real........its in every little thing u use.......cans/plastics/diapers/electricity/cigarette/diesel/ and so many many more out there that contribute to global warming......its a danger to the ozone layers because it takes hundreds, thousands and yes even a million years for all these things to decay......
a lot of people take garbage for granted, they just throw it away without a thot. however, a lot f the trash that is thrown away takes years and years to rot away. and they are contributing factors to global warming. below is a short list of how long different types of trash take to fully decay:
aluminium can - 200 - 500 years
apple core - 2 months
cigarette butts - 40years
cotton rage - 1 - 5monthsd
diapers - 200years
glass bottle - 1 million years
tin can - 50 - 100 years
fishing line - 600 years
sand shoes - 75years
plastic bottle - 50 - 80 years
and many many more.......now the question is: WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO HELP COMBAT GLOBAL WARMING?
i can go on and on and on on these....but then u wont get to read all that i have to write down....so i'll let u do yo own research on global warming.......but if u wana know how to combat global warming............very simple......IT STARTS @ HOME.............
dua mai keri ;o)
