In 1992, Ted Strickland was elected to represent Ohio's 6th Congressional District and reelected in 1996. In all, he has represented twenty Ohio counties stretching from the suburbs of Cincinnati to the suburbs of Youngstown.

In May 2005, Strickland announced that he’s seeking to become governor of Ohio. As governor, he wants to focus on bringing good jobs to Ohio and making its schools among the best in the nation.

During his last five terms in Congress, Strickland served on the House Energy and Commerce Committee and was an active member of the Congressional Steel Caucus, opposing trade policies that threaten the steel industry. During his last term, he became a member of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, and is the ranking Democrat on its Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations. As a member of that committee, he has advocated for full funding of veteran health programs. Strickland is author of the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), a federal initiative that now provides health insurance to millions of children of working parents.

Professionally, Strickland has served as a minister, a psychologist and a college professor. He was the director of a Methodist children’s home, an assistant professor of psychology at Shawnee State University, and a consulting psychologist at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility (SOCF).

Strickland earned a B.A. in history from Asbury College in Kentucky, a Master of Divinity from the Asbury Theological Seminary and a doctoral degree in counseling psychology from the University of Kentucky.
