Join us for the Third Annual MOTHERS' DAY PEACE PARTY - Sunday, May 9, 2010, 2 - 4 pm, at the India Garden (by the Gandhi Statue), 1190 Martin Luther King Blvd., Rockefeller Park, Cleveland (free curbside parking). SPECIAL GUEST: SEPTIMA CLARK ("The Grandmother of the Civil Rights Movement"), portrayed by Sherrie Tolliver of Women in History. Come, bring your mother... bring a friend. Enjoy a peaceful afternoon among friends! The first Mother's Day proclamation in 1870 by Julia Ward Howe was a passionate demand for disarmament and peace. On Sunday, May 9, Cleveland-area families will again celebrate Mother's Day as a day to promote world peace and civil rights. Third Annual Mother's Day Peace Party, free and open to the public, features entertainments, refreshments, free family photos at the Gandhi statue (in India Garden) and art tables for kids to make their own Mother's Day cards. Students from Hindu Heritage School and the Smith-Sicking Songsters will also perform. Cleveland actress Sherrie Tolliver, in authentic period costume, will portray Septima Clark, born in 1898 the daughter of a former slave. Septima was a civil rights activists years before the 1955 Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycott focused world attention on America's deep racial segregation. Septima Clark mentored Rosa Parks who sparked the boycott by not giving her bus seat to a white person.
