Arts and CultureThe economic value of pro sports surfaces at A.J. Rocco'sSubmitted by Norm Roulet on Mon, 05/15/2006 - 12:52.
While I'm not a pro sports expert, I was very pleased to see today, having coffee at A. J. Rocco's, a friendly table of local sports experts including at least one of the Cleveland Cavliers - probably the only one I'd recognize out of uniform (and I don't mean King James). I asked if they minded me taking a picture but they weren't dressed for the press. So, if you want to hang out with the Cavs, in their hangouts, you'll have to come downtown to A.J. Rocco's yourself. Or, you could reach out to them...

? of the Day: What is the future of the Cleveland Playhouse?Submitted by Norm Roulet on Mon, 05/15/2006 - 06:59.
I commented, in a posting about an event at the Cleveland Playhouse, "I hate going to anything at the Cleveland Playhouse/MOCA complex - my last choice of venue for anything in NEO - which makes me sad, since I like good theater and they have the only significant Philip Johnson building in town".

Snow Monkeys Showing Signs of Chemical ExposureSubmitted by Zebra Mussel on Sun, 05/07/2006 - 06:59.
I wonder where we can find the details of the actual GEM spill. Release estimates for air and storm water releases. Environment Canada wondered if the city shut down its water intakes? Anyone know? You got to watch out for toxic exposure.. have you seen what they were saying back in 1993?

Last Weekend for ALL DIGITAL at MOCASubmitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Thu, 05/04/2006 - 13:44.
There are only a few days left to see All Digital, one the most visually interesting and intellectually challenging exhibitions at MOCA Cleveland in recent memory. The show closes Sunday May 7th. If you were there for the opening make sure you make a second visit to experience CyberLounge and the ArtCasts. What are ArtCasts? They are digital recordings (think Podcasts) of interviews with the artists who participated in All Digital. They can be heard via your iPod, or, if you don't have an iPod, MOCA will loan you one in exchange for your id and a credit card. ( categories: )
Exhibition Opening, The Birth of Genius: Viktor Schreckengost and the Cleveland Institute of Art 1924-1929Submitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Tue, 05/02/2006 - 12:53.
05/20/2006 - 09:00 05/20/2006 - 17:00 Etc/GMT-4 Viktor Schreckengost showed enormous talent while a student at The Cleveland Institute of Art (then the Cleveland School of Art). His figure drawing and design renderings from the 1920s are stunning examples of his sensitive approach to form. Viktor never forgot the power of observation; he perfected it in the industrial design products that followed his post-college years. Location

? of the Day: Do You Like the Peter B. Lewis Building (Weatherhead School of Management at Case) by Frank Gehry?Submitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Tue, 05/02/2006 - 12:22.
I know everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I am always surprised when I hear that someone does not like the architecture of Frank Gehry. I will concede the Peter B. Lewis Building may not be the most practical of buildings, but isn't that the point? Gehry's architecture sends the perfect message to the business school, the university and NEO: don't fit in, take risks, do thinks differently.

Prelude2Cinema becomes a Branded Entertainment CompanySubmitted by prelude2cinema on Sat, 04/29/2006 - 12:32.
Digital Movie Company Prelude2Cinema has become a Branded Entertainment CompanyTo explore what that means, we first have to look at what is branded entertainment.First, it looks like product placement, but it is not. It is the integration of a brand into a creative production. The integration must be done in a way that promotes the product, but also allows the creative production to entertain. This is a new field, but yet it has its roots in the beginning of movies and television.

Bread and Puppet Comes to CoventrySubmitted by Susan Miller on Sat, 04/29/2006 - 12:25.
05/07/2006 - 15:00 05/07/2006 - 16:00 Etc/GMT-4 Bread & Puppet Theater was founded in 1963 by Peter Schumann on New York City’s Lower East Side. Besides rod-puppet and hand-puppet shows for children, the concerns of the first productions were rents, rats, police and other problems of that neighborhood. More complex theater pieces, in which sculpture, music, dance and language were equal partners, followed. The puppets grew bigger and bigger. Annual presentations for Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving and Memorial Day often included children and adults from the community as participants. Many performances were done in the street. During the Vietnam War, Bread & Puppet staged block-long precessions involving hundreds of people. In 1970 Bread & Puppet moved to Vermont as theater-in-residence at Goddard College, combining puppetry with gardening and bread baking in a serious way, learning to live in the countryside and letting itself be influenced by the experience. In 1974 the Theater moved to a farm in Glover in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. The 140-year-old hay barn was transformed into a museum for veteran puppets. Our Domestic Resurrection Circus, a two-day outdoor festival of puppetry shows, was presented annually through 1998. The company makes its income from touring new and old productions on the American continent and abroad and from the sales of Bread & Puppet Press’s posters and publications. The traveling puppet shows range from tightly composed theater pieces presented by members of the company, to extensive outdoor pageants, which require the participation of many volunteers. Bread & Puppet is one of the oldest, nonprofit, self-supporting theatrical companies in this country. Location

Rebirth Brass Band shows there's more rebirth needed in NEOSubmitted by Norm Roulet on Thu, 04/27/2006 - 00:21.
When I heard Rebirth Brass Band was planning a second line jazz parade in Cleveland, to raise awareness of the Tri-C Jazz Fest, I was thrilled - not only is Rebirth awesome, but living in NOLA gave me a real appreciation for the energy such an event can create. I certainly expected Cleveland music fans, and promoters of a more enlightened community, would turn out in droves to support this great band, this free parade, and a good time. Well, 100s of fans and lucky by-standers lucked out, and the rest of the region missed out - but here are some shots in appreciation to Rebirth Brass Band and the organizers of the Tri-C Jazz Fest - I hope more people make their way to the other events scheduled in the coming days.
