As expected--and botched two weeks, ago--Sanders and his Plain Dealer and corporate-sponsored handlers again retracted Tremont and Ginn from the "Transformation" Plan's death sentence.  East High was "promised" to be reopened in 2011 as a charter school, if corporate support stepped in.

Nexus One Google Smart Phone on REALNEO

My Nexus One Google Smart/Super Phone keeps freaking me out.

Sunday, I entered an address into the map feature to get directions to somewhere in Painesville. A few  G3+wifi+1 Gh+HD moments later... bingo. Turn by turn - map with arrows - click on the stick figure and you have streetview photo panoramas that are amazing. Click another button and BETA - Google Navigation - a lady says "Drive 1000 feet to Euclid and turn right."

Don't believe the LIE

Here are some bleak photos taken today of William Rainey Harper School in the Old Brooklyn neighborhood near Fulton and Biddulph Rds.

This is the reality 18 neighborhoods, 16 east side, 2 west side--will live with soon, if the Cleveland Metropolitan School District board approves the "Transformation" Plan.

Question of the Day: Do you know "The WebLady"?

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Mon, 02/22/2010 - 13:11.

I am not in any way near the intellectual status as you and your members of realNEO, but I appreciate the assistance.  When I went into the 2nd grade at Chesterfield Elementary school, the teachers reported to my Mom that my attention span was very short and that I fidgeted a lot which disturbed the class.  I always did my work really fast and correct and then when left idle, that's when the fidgeting would start.  So they put me in an Enrichment Program which was similar to the Major Work program and that's how I met Henry - I was transferred to Parkwood Elementary where the

I've Identified Some Astounding Information Technology Talents in real NEO who have been Harmed by our Leadership

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Mon, 02/22/2010 - 07:37.

I've Identified Some Astounding Information Technology Talent in real NEO that has been harmed by our regional leadership, and I'm trying to find a nice way to deal with that. Each of these people have risen to positions of demonstrated excellence in their fields - have innovated our regional information technology landscape and had global impact - and each of them have been directly violated by leadership in our community - IT leadership and community development leadership. They have each done the right things - each taken the right steps - and each been blocked along the way. And each are "minority". How do I now give them the proper status they deserve in the community, where they have not been welcome or valued?

The fight for infrastructure bragging rights: with bipartisan stimulous perhaps?

With relief I read in a recent Plain Dealer article (1) that Ohio Senate President Bill Harris may lead Republican legislators to skotch the $400 million slow train across Ohio. Mind you, one of the many things we need  in the U.S. to be competitive with the rest of the “advanced” world are fast passenger trains, with reduced carbon footprints, racing between major cities less than 400 miles apart.

George Polk Award for Videography - Neda Agha Soltan Shot in Iran

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Sun, 02/21/2010 - 00:11.

I suggest realNEO members consider the developments surfaced in the Guardian article highlighted below. One of the world's top Journalism prizes - The George Polk Award - was awarded to an anonymous bystander who captured a death in Iran on a cell phone and uploaded it to the Internet. The 40 second video is the most disturbing I have ever seen, by a long shot, and I do not embed it here, nor include even a still frame, nor do I recommend anyone viewing it - if you do you will see a person die, close-up, in a very bloody and graphic way.

Why I post about this on realNEO is that, as the Guardian writes, the "New 'videography' category reflects rising professional use of user-created content". Further: "This award celebrates the fact that, in today's world, a brave bystander with a cellphone camera can use video-sharing and social networking sites to deliver news," said the New York Times' John Darnton, the curator of the Polk Awards.

My world has been quieter, lately, and then I realized... less spam on REALNEO

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Thu, 02/18/2010 - 14:17.

Props to Jeff Shuler, realNEO's tech administrator. He has been implementing an anti-spam strategy that seems to be working... meaning admins don't have to block a dozen spammers and delete their lame links, each day....! Thank you Jeff S!

If you are a real realNEO user and you have any trouble with accessing or posting to the site, it is not because an admin hates you - there is software now analyzing all the content posted to the site and running tests to rate how likely it is that the content is spam, and Jeff is adjusting settings to try and block out the spam, without impacting real users. The system must learn - a type of "artificial intelligence" - and it is learning - and it seems to be working. IF YOU ARE BLOCKED FOR ANY REASON AND SHOULD NOT BE BLOCKED, GO TO THE CONTACT LINK IN THE MENU BAR ABOVE AND LET US KNOW!

Software Freedom Day in Toronto 2006

I attended an excellent Software Freedom Day event in Toronto in 2006, which I introduced on REALNEO here, and covered on REALNEO here - I actually needed a copy of Ubuntu that day, so it came in very handy.

I'd like to see Northeast Ohio celebrate Software Freedom Day 2010 in a BIG WAY - Saturday, September 18 - and follow the model I saw in use in Toronto, which included active, friendly engagement on a busy street, with workshops and light training/Q&A offered inside a receptive place. Of course, the Linux Penguin was out-front to draw attention to the event... we definitely need a penguin.

play job lotto, could be maddening fun or just make you mad!

Submitted by rnojonson on Tue, 02/16/2010 - 12:18.

Play the job lotto, it's easy. Post your resume on the net, apply for every job where the shoe fits and wait for your number to be called. Some employers will post all sorts of contact info and yet say "no phone calls please". Some are required to collect so many applicants to be a sample pool, but the boss's nephew is singled out already. The fresh faced youth's first job is so important for his success. What, he has few job specific skills, no training, no experience, but he is a crony.

I'm Proud My Wife Has Been A Great Role Model To 10,000+ People Considering Childbirth

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Sun, 02/14/2010 - 10:48.

It has been exciting to watch, over the past week, as this beautiful video clip of my beautiful wife Evelyn giving birth to our beautiful daughter Clara has been viewed by nearly 6,000 people on YouTube - a companion video clip of my wife in hypno-birth, water-birth labor has received nearly as much global attention... in a week. In a week, those two clips attracted around 10,000 unique viewers... about as many unique viewers as come to our REALNEO community, in a week. The value of sharing these videos on YouTube is obvious - that is a good distribution channel to teach people about childbirth. So is REALNEO.
