things Ed was thinking about

Submitted by Susan Miller on Fri, 12/19/2008 - 21:44.

Attached are minutes from an October 2007 meeting of City of Cleveland Planning, Cleveland Cuyahoga County Port Authority, URS and US Army Corps of Engineers. Ed had these issues in mind (among numerous others) when he left us. Let's catch up a bit. Can anoyone give an update as to how these questions have been addressed more than a year later?

Highlights include:

Ohio Film Industry - Other States Move Further, While Ohio Governor Rejects A First Step Ahead With His Veto

Submitted by Kevin Cronin on Fri, 12/19/2008 - 20:31.

In the same week that Ohio Governor Strickland vetoes a bill to create a tax credit for those creating film and video production jobs in Ohio, the Illinois Governor (yeah, that guy, the one who's been in the news lately), signed a bill to expand their 20% tax credit to 30%. Do you think he knows something that Governor Strickland does not?

Systems Thinking: Driving Postive Change via TRUE Collaboratives for Comprehensive Stakeholder Benefit

Submitted by Sudhir Kade on Tue, 12/16/2008 - 20:19.

It's been quite interesting attending events like the recent Local Foods conversation held at AJ Roccos and coordinated by Josh Klein of CityFresh, among others. Reading through the main tenets of the recent co-proposal of the Land Lab of Kent State's CUDC and Neighborhood Progress, Inc provided a good overall game plan with a systems-oriented lens - certainly an understanding of all of these various systems as part of a greater system comprising our region was heartening to see.

Answering questions

The Probate Judge who appointed Tana Carney to the Cleveland Foundation is John J Donnelly, who also appointed the Cleveland Metroparks Commissioners. The longest serving is Fred Rzepka, a developer (who was reportedly on the site committee for the Browns stadium).

Where was the Cleveland Restoration Society, when their wonks demolished the Historic Giglio Farm

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Sat, 12/13/2008 - 13:22.

About the time some wacked-out over-empowered government wonks were demolishing Frank Giglio's Historic Landmark house, on his city-desecrated urban farm, all the "restorationists" in our Society were abuzz about the chance to rub elbows with Timothy "Art Is Back" Rub at the sell-out "36th installment of our Community Luncheon" Cleveland Restoration Society self-love-fest, held last week at Wyndham Cleveland, at Playhouse Square...

Ohio business credits for purchasing sustainably?

Submitted by Jeff Schuler on Sun, 12/07/2008 - 15:41.

This came through the REALNEO Contact form:

I am interested in if businesses get credit for purchasing products that
have a positive effect on sustainability and offers a reduction in
environmental impact. I work for Océ and we offer products that run on
less electricity and all the parts are recycled and the toner is a Iron
base versus carbon base. I would like to know if that makes any difference
to businesses purchasing products in Ohio.

I will suggest he check into Entrepreneurs for Sustainability for help, but does anyone have other ideas for him?

Imagine large gardens in every neighborhood.
Imagine neighborhoods that grow enough fresh vegetables and fruit to provide for the people who live there.
Imagine yourself growing a large chunk of that food.
Imagine organizing friends and neighbors to grow the food needed in your neighborhood.
Imagine growing enough food to bring home 1 to 3 thousand dollars a week.
Imagine a better world with you a part of it.

Appreciate the Magic

In college, I studied biology and found myself puzzled by altruism. Why do some animals/people act selflessly in society? Of course, biology's answer puts a genetic spin on it--altruism benefits the species, right?

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

Submitted by Martha Eakin on Thu, 11/13/2008 - 13:49.

The other day Phillip Morris (online PD)
was bemoaning the lack of leadership in Cleveland. I think on the same day I ran across some tidbit that intimated that Chris Ronayne might run for mayor of Cleveland next time around. I thought to myself, “Well, here we go with more of the same.”

Proposal to Resolve Issue of Medical Mart and Convention Center

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Thu, 11/13/2008 - 12:15.

Several years ago, it is said, Cleveland Clinic CEO Cosgrove developed a plan to create a Medical Mart in Cleveland, as a place to centralize much of the commerce between medical device and product supply and demand. This story, still developing, will certainly be one of the great turning points in Cleveland history, as it has raised taxes and spent significant public time, trust and resources on what appear to be whims on promises, which are not appearing very sound... especially under today's shifting and certainly catastrophic economic and social times - not to overlook the fact we must completely overhaul all aspects of health care, supply and demand.
