PUTITONTHEBALLOT - CUYAHOGA COUNTY - WHERE'S YOUR SALES TAX MONEY NOW?

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Thu, 12/13/2007 - 16:41.

Cuyahoga County, Ohio, has been collecting a quarter percent more sales and use tax for almost 3 months now - since October 1, 2007.   Projected by Commissioners Tim Hagan and Jimmy Dimora at about one million per week, that extrapolates to about 11 million in the County coffers from the added sales tax.

I accompanied Cleveland City Councilman Zack Reed, (center with clip board above) a number of times as he collected signatures in order to allow a County wide referendum vote to determine if the voters would support such a tax.

ROLDO BARTIMOLE ON BREWED FRESH DAILY - POSITIVELY CLEVELAND + PLUS

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Thu, 12/13/2007 - 15:06.

BREWED FRESH DAILY HAS A THREAD which carries  a discussion which I believe it is important for everyone in NEO to read.  The thread is especially important now that the City of Cleveland is looking desperately for immediate cash-back from the taxpayers’ UDAG loans.

2007 Cleveland Institute of Art Faculty Show

Barbara Stanczak sculptures

The Cleveland Institute of Art is extraordinarily important to Northeast Ohio and the world for the great artists and designers educated there, and for the great artists and designers who are the educators, and staff. Each year, the work of the diverse CIA faculty is showcased in an exhibition not to be missed... the reception for 2007 was last Friday, December 7, and a great event, as always... perhaps the last ever in the historic Gund Building Reinberger Gallery space, as the CIA moves in total to Euclid Avenue.

Renowned architect Carl Stein explains "rampant environmental recklessness" of plans for Breuer

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Mon, 12/03/2007 - 08:31.

Marcel Breuer Cleveland Trust Tower at night

November 28, 2007, renowned architect Carl Stein, FAIA, Principal of elemental architecture, llc, of New York City, shared his valuable understanding about the environment in Northeast Ohio and the world, focusing on the energy of buildings and a specific analysis of the Breuer Cleveland Trust Tower, in downtown Cleveland. This is the only high-rise by revolutionary architect Marcel Breuer, and it is globally appreciated as a masterpiece of modern design and construction... yet it is planned for demolition by Cuyahoga County Commissioners Dimora and Hagan.  Stein worked with Breuer for many years, including when Breuer built the Cleveland Trust Tower, and Stein's conclusion is there is no rational excuse for demolishing the Breuer. As Stein states, "just that Breuer and this building are so important is enough reason to preserve the Breuer"... although Stein gives many other reasons!

Lessons from the Soccer Field

Submitted by Joseph Menkhaus on Tue, 11/20/2007 - 20:39.

I had one of those experiences a few months ago... One of my pre-teen kids plays on a soccer team in Euclid that travels to other local communities to play soccer... thus they call it a "travel" team.  It is considered by some to be elite.  I am not so sure; I think it might be that it is primarily just the kids who have parents who are willing to go all over for their kids.

As wind turbines multiply, so do bird concerns

Submitted by Zebra Mussel on Sat, 11/17/2007 - 11:29.

Pacific Northwest is example of energy boom — and worried biologists

PORTLAND, Ore. - Wind energy may be emerging as an important alternative power source for the Northwest, but there are concerns about the danger to hawks and eagles as turbines expand to wild areas of the Columbia River Gorge.

By year's end, more than 1,500 turbines will be churning out electricity in the windy gorge. Until now, most of the projects have gone up in wheat fields — cultivated land that long ago drove away the rodents that raptors hunt. But as wind energy developers move into wilder areas along the ridge of the gorge, near canyons and shrub-covered rangeland, birds could be at risk from the 150-foot blades of giant turbines.

CIVIC INTEREST IN BREUER TOWER CAN CAN COMMISSIONERS HAGAN & DIMORA & TURN OVER GOV'T IN CUYAHOGA

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Fri, 11/09/2007 - 17:40.

Neither the Gund Foundation nor the Cleveland Foundation made a peep to preserve the Breuer, and two of our County Commissioners (with the exception of Mr. Lawson-Jones) are (at best) too ignorant to appreciate the international architectural jewel which Jacobs bought and sold to the County  (The Breuer Tower, like the Coast Guard Station, shows Jacobs has erudite architectural taste?).
