EducationHVAC CONDENSORS EVAPORATING IN NEO ("anecdote" #3 for J. Murray)Submitted by Jeff Buster on Tue, 10/30/2007 - 17:53.
Inner Circle has Multiple Meanings, Around University CircleSubmitted by Norm Roulet on Mon, 10/29/2007 - 12:15.
University Circle is a community of overlapping circles of interdependent institutions, boards, patrons and public interests that in some way touch every life in the NEO universe, worldwide (well illustrated by the current Cleveland Orchestra tour of Europe). So thoughts of "Inner Circles" within this star-power constellation bring illusions of grand people and designs. So true, as the latest "Inner Circle" added to University Circle is a very sharp and strong sculpture by Cleveland Institute of Art President David Deming, commissioned by the Putnam Sculpture Collection, of Case Western Reserve University... a great collision of worlds.

IMPROVE YOUR SOIL THIS FALLSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Mon, 10/29/2007 - 11:05.
This Fall, rather than raking and blowing those autumn leaves off your lawn and garden why don’t you just mow them into your lawn and leave them in your garden.

TAX ABATEMENT /PUBLIC INVESTMENT IN NEW HOUSING WHILE DEMOLISHING TAXPAYER’S HOMESSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Sat, 10/27/2007 - 11:37.
“Battery Park” is a multi square block development on West 72 south of the CSX tracks just on the bluff above Edgewater park and the Shoreway.
Right next to Battery Park is the old Detroit neighborhood where there are numerous vacant houses.
NEW STREET SIGN – WHAT’S THE MESSAGE? (“anecdote” 2 for J. Murray)Submitted by Jeff Buster on Thu, 10/25/2007 - 14:48.
Last week when I walked by the post in the photo above there was a street sign on the post. Today the sign is gone and the two bolts which had fastened the sign to the post are laying in the grass at the base of the post.

BEGGARS IN CLEVELAND?Submitted by Jeff Buster on Wed, 10/17/2007 - 12:03.
There's a new sidewalk sign in Public Square (and elsewhere downtown). Another sign that our society is dismantling itself into them and us.

CAMERAS SHOOT MAYOR JACKSON AND DR. SANDERSSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Fri, 10/12/2007 - 16:52.
City of Cleveland Mayor Jackson and Cleveland Metropolitan School District Superintendent Eugene Sanders held a “news conference” in the Mayor’s Chambers this afternoon. The security magnetometer at the Mayor’s City Hall second floor office suite doorway sensed metal (my camera?) and buzzed when I went in, but it buzzed for everyone. No one was minding it. Anyway, I’m sure there was not any concealed carry in the City Hall because the yellow sign on the front door of the City Hall said “guns not allowed”.
CHICAGO & TORONTO HAVE PALPABLE VITALITY – WHY DOESN'T CLEVELAND?Submitted by Jeff Buster on Fri, 10/12/2007 - 11:25.
When you visit downtown Chicago or Toronto you can feel those places are more civically healthy than downtown Cleveland.

University Circle Cancer Moving Down East Boulevard... Is there an Urban Planner in the House?Submitted by Norm Roulet on Fri, 10/05/2007 - 23:59.
The last two realneo headers are pans of a site I pass often, on my way between the East and West sides, which is bounded by East 105, Wade Park and East Boulevard, in one of the most important historic and cultural neighborhoods in America, where I was shocked to find a group of significant apartment buildings being demolished.
Toxie the Cat Now Speaks Spanish, Still Educates Kids About Home EnvironmentSubmitted by Charles Frost on Tue, 10/02/2007 - 19:53.
If you’ve ever spent time in my classroom as a student you’ll know exactly why I kept clicking on the cat, but this charming feline has apparently, and mysteriously, learned to speak Spanish! In fact, Toxie may be a great way to get students in your class thinking about their own homes and observing the things that go on in them through a whole new set of furry sunglasses.
That’s because ToxMystery is a brief, fun, and educational game for kids from the National Library of Medicine that takes them through an entire house with their entertaining host, Toxie, locating all the things that are creating an environmental hazard while answering questions about their impact on the health of its inhabitants. And although it’s been designed for children from age 7 to 10, I’ve got to admit it’s a bit amusing to watch the cat dance around once they’ve correctly identified all of the problems in a room. At the end, they get to print out a personalized certificate of completion, letting the world know they’ve learned a bit about protecting the environment in their own homes too.

One Laptop Per ChildSubmitted by Charles Frost on Thu, 09/27/2007 - 15:50.
"Thank you for your interest in One Laptop Per Child. Our mission is to provide a means for learning, self-expression and exploration to the nearly two billion children of the developing world with little or no access to education. While children are by nature eager for knowledge, many countries have insufficient resources to devote to education—sometimes less than $20 a year per child. Imagine the potential that could be unlocked by giving every child in the world the tools they need to learn, no matter who they are, no matter where they live, no matter how little they may have. If you'd like to donate an XO laptop today, simply click the donation button on the right, above the photo. A donation of $200 will pay for and deliver one XO laptop to a child in a developing nation, $400 will pay for and deliver two XO laptops, and so on. Starting November 12, One Laptop Per Child will be offering a Give 1 Get 1 Program for a brief window of time. For $399, you will be purchasing two XO laptops—one that will be sent to empower a child to learn in a developing nation, and one that will be sent to your child at home. If you're interested in Give 1 Get 1, we'll be happy to send you a reminder email. Just sign up in the box to the left and you'll receive your reminder prior to the November 12 launch date. Once again, thank you. We sincerely hope you'll join our growing community of people working to create a connected, educated, enlightened future for the world's most essential resource—its children."

PUBLISH (& DISCUSS) OR PERISH – THE ISRAEL LOBBYSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Thu, 09/27/2007 - 10:12.
After the presentation by authors John Mearsheimer (left) and Stephen Walt (right) of the The Israel Lobby at Case’s Ford Auditorium last night, I approached Alice Bach, the tenured Case prof (on the stage between the authors) and complimented her on her perspicacity shown in arranging Mr. Mearsheimer's and Mr. Walt's visit to Cleveland.
PUBLIC URINATION – WHY CLEVELAND IS FAILINGSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Tue, 09/25/2007 - 14:25.
Let’s say it’s 2:30 in the morning in August in Downtown Cleveland, you are a homeless guy in your fifties named Mr. Baskin, and you are in the grassy walkway area (pictured in daytime above) behind the County Administration Building. And you’ve got to go.

COUNTY WEB SITE ADVERTIZES FOR KENNEDYMART- YOUR TAXES AT WORK!Submitted by Jeff Buster on Fri, 09/21/2007 - 15:33.
I think this is illegal and outrageous and corrupt that our Cuyahoga County web site is actually hosting and promoting a private for profit financial venture - go to the county web site and click on kennedymart and you'll be asked to ID yourself before you get any info. I won't give my info. This is why NEO is headed down...our "Government" is in the pockets of businesses while we are paying our government employees salaries. We are losing our pants twice!

WiFi Comes to RoxburySubmitted by Norm Roulet on Thu, 09/20/2007 - 20:07.
We're close enough to our move in to 1894 Roxbury, in East Cleveland, that we have had our DSL service switched over from Ohio City to East Cleveland. Whereas on Clinton, at W. 45th Street, there were several WiFi signals in the air, my new POP on Roxbury is the only signal in the digital darkness of this corner of East Cleveland.
