Plain Dealer Reader Rejection Of Issue 6 Politics Could Cost Plain Dealer Employees $ Millions In Pay

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Sun, 10/18/2009 - 23:22.

The Cleveland Plain-Plan Dealer has shown remarkable bias in the coverage and promotion of Issue 6 - the NEOCON-created, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor/Off Shore Wind Economy Expert/political insider's-insider Bill Mason-sponsored plan to eliminate Cuyahoga County government, as we know it, and replace it with some lawyerese slight-of-mind proposal for new leadership of our region... aka NEOCON 6.

Confessions of a bibliophile:  I read the Plain Dealer every Sunday for the book section and I am so grateful that the Plain Dealer understands the extreme regional importance of the BOOK.

Ohio Architect-Artist, Andrew Reach, Creates Poster for D.C. March

Submitted by Eternity on Fri, 10/16/2009 - 15:42.
Andrew Reach @ Equality Across America - As a disabled gay man in a loving relationship for almost three decades, I’m not physically capable of marching. So the way me and my long term partner Bruce Baumwoll want to give back to the movement for our equality is through my art. We’re very passionate about the healing power of art. It’s my lifeline to coping with living in a state of constant pain. We share the art to give people hope and inspiration in their own lives.

Oberlin Bassoon Quartet

The Fine Arts Department is pleased to present the Oberlin Bassoon Quartet (OBQ) on October 31st, 2009 at 2pm in the 3rd floor lobby of the Main Library building (325 Superior Ave., Cleveland, Ohio, 44114). The OBQ will perform works by Boismortier, Dubios, J.S. Bach, Tony Bruno and Peter Schickele. This program is free and open to all ages. For more information call 216-623-2848.

The first Oberlin Conservatory of Music bassoon quartet was formed in 1994 and was called "Firewood". As interest in playing bassoon quartets grew at Oberlin more groups formed. In 2002 another quartet from Oberlin called "The Black Sheep" did a short tour of China and that solidified the trend of playing bassoon quartets at Oberlin. Since 2004 there has always been a group called The Oberlin Bassoon Quartet with rotating personnel. Since 2004 the OBQ has done extensive tours of China and Italy, and has played performances in other music schools around the country.

The members of the current OBQ are 4 sophomore bassoon majors at Oberlin from different parts of the US and abroad:

  • Liz Bennett, Colorado
  • Shelly Li, China
  • Jake Purcell, Washington
  • Brittney Walker, Illinois

R.I.P. GOURMET MAGAGINE ...

Condé Nast Publications announced yesterday that they would cease monthly publication of Gourmet Magazine.  Gourmet began in 1941, though Conde Nast only owned it since the 80s. A friend of mine called it the fall of the Western world a few years ago when he heard that University School planned to stop offering French -- for me, the death of Gourmet Magazine is a similarly bleak omen for America.

NYT: 36 Hours in Cleveland

Submitted by Eternity on Fri, 09/18/2009 - 22:41.

New York Times - “YOU Gotta Be Tough” was a popular T-shirt slogan worn by Clevelanders during the 1970s, a grim period marked by industrial decline, large-scale population flight and an urban environment so toxic the Cuyahoga River actually caught on fire. These days it still helps to be at least a little tough; a fiercely blue-collar ethos endures.
